The beach isn’t ideal for swimming because of the changing tides, but low tide in the morning brings starfish if you walk 1-2 km along the shore. The coastline is lovely in either direction, with palms and mangroves, and it felt refreshingly quiet without many tourists or sellers. The place is still being improved, too. We came for somewhere peaceful and left really impressed by the warm welcome and how kind and thoughtful the staff were. Our room was clean and comfortable, the pool was great, and we enjoyed the food. Thanks to the reception team for all the helpful ideas about what to see nearby. We had a wonderful stay at Amber lodge in Zanzibar, and I’d happily recommend it to anyone looking to relax.

Pongwe is much more laid-back than other parts of the island, and the beach right outside Amber Lodge is rocky. Kiwengwa’s prettier, more touristy beaches are about a 10-minute drive away. If you’re staying more than a few days, renting a car makes getting around easier. I spent 10 days here on my first solo trip, arriving in mid-June just before peak season. There were no other guests, but I felt safe. The staff were welcoming and accommodating, the hotel was clean, and it was great value. I did have a few power cuts and some bug bites, including spider bites. I’d still definitely recommend staying here. Asante Sana, Amber Lodge.

The room was great for the price, and the staff were so friendly. They pointed us to a nearby local restaurant with reasonable prices and generous servings, which we really appreciated. The hotel’s location worked perfectly for us, and the good service made our trip memorable. It felt like home. Greetings from France, we’ll definitely be back. Thanks, guys, for making the vacation so lovely.

We spent two wonderfully quiet days at this small, peaceful hotel on pongwe Beach. The rooms were spotless, new, and just right, and the staff were very kind. There’s also a good bar and restaurant.
