Unguja Lodge

At low tide there’s plenty of beach to explore, and at high tide you can go straight down the steps into the water to swim or snorkel. The pool is beautiful, even better than the pictures. This is a tucked-away hotel with a collection of private lodges, away from the crowds but an easy walk from shops and restaurants. The staff were amazing and so helpful when we nearly had to cancel, and we were glad we could still make it. The lodges are unique, with a lovely setup and a semi-outdoor shower and toilet that’s hard to describe but brilliant. There are monkeys in the trees, little deer running around, and lots of lizards, it feels wonderfully natural. The food was excellent, with plenty of variety each day. Can’t wait to come back, you won’t be disappointed.

The sunsets were exceptional, and the food was delicious. Unguja Lodge has rustic charm, spacious, well-equipped rooms, and excellent service. It sits in a peaceful, picturesque spot on the coast, though a little off the beaten path. The hotel is quietly refurbishing parts of the property. Well worth the detour.

If you’re after privacy and quiet, with no TV, this authentic place is a good fit. The big bungalows have a mosquito net over the bed, a shower facing the ocean, and a tucked-away private garden that leaves a lasting impression. The beach is rocky, with steps down into the water, but there’s a beautiful sandy stretch a little to the left. You can snorkel there.

The bungalows are beautifully designed, and the surrounding nature is magnificent. Unguja is the lodge’s name and the original name of Zanzibar. The founders found a gifted architect to create the design. It’s a small place with only a few bungalows, and it managed to get through the COVID crisis, which must have been a real challenge. Some equipment needs refreshing as a result. If you’re going to Zanzibar, I’d make time to discover this place now. Martin the manager and his team will do their best to meet your needs and provide good food. It’s a hidden gem that isn’t easy to find and isn’t on booking,com, so you’ll meet people here who really love nature and Zanzibar and are looking for authentic, unusual experiences.
