Sunny House Paje II

Being a short walk from the beach was convenient, and the hosts were kind and welcoming. But the hostel was in very disappointing condition, and I can’t recommend it, especially if cleanliness, comfort, and basic upkeep matter to you. The kitchen was extremely dirty, with utensils in such poor shape that we weren’t comfortable cooking. We had to wash everything thoroughly before using it. Our room also seemed like it hadn’t been cleaned before we arrived. Several wall hooks were broken, the bathroom hygiene was poor, and I was shocked to find a previous guest’s hair in the shower. The sink was still dirty, and the showerhead was loose and difficult to use. There was a hole in the hallway ceiling, and rain leaked in. In heavy rain, water even ran into the room, which was uncomfortable and far below an acceptable standard at any price. There were no proper windows, only mesh screens and mosquito nets, so we could clearly hear everything from the street and had trouble relaxing or sleeping.

Sarah and Axel are from Paje, and their local knowledge really showed. Their suggestions for food, activities, and people to contact were spot on, and they were around whenever we needed help. It felt like staying with friends, not at a guesthouse. The atmosphere was relaxed and down to earth, with quiet common areas and a space that felt part of the neighborhood. You blend into Paje’s everyday rhythm instead of sitting in a tourist bubble, which made the experience feel more genuine. We stayed three nights but could easily have stayed a month. The room was clean, the bed super comfortable, and the place felt safe and easy. Sunny House is in a great spot, 30 seconds from the beach, right by the taxi stand, and just a couple of minutes from the best restaurants and cafes. Would 100% come back.

The best part of Sunny House is Sarah, the host. She’s so kind and helpful, always ready with local tips, a chat, or a hand with whatever comes up, and she makes you feel genuinely cared for. The relaxed, warm atmosphere also brings out the spirit of Zanzibar. It felt like home while still giving me a real connection to local culture. I stayed twice in 2023, first in June and then again in August for a whole month. That first visit made me fall for the island’s "real" vibe, and I couldn’t resist coming back. The location is ideal, just a few steps from pristine Paje beach and a short 5-10 minute walk from the village center and main road. Everything you need is nearby. Sunny House is a great place for an authentic, relaxing time in Paje, and I’d highly recommend it. Thank you, Sarah, for making such a special space. I’ll definitely return.

Sunny House feels like home and works well for a few days or a longer stay. My friend and I spent three weeks there recently and really enjoyed it. It’s fine for a solo traveler or a couple, too. The house is about a two-minute walk from Paje beach and under 10 minutes from the main road, where you can buy what you need. There are also plenty of restaurants and local places nearby. We chose a room with its own bathroom, though shared bathrooms are available. The kitchen is open for use and equipped, so it’s easy to cook for yourself, and there’s a large table on the terrace. The house was clean, the rooms comfortable, and the place reflected island life. Sara and Axel, who look after the house, are lovely and always ready with advice or help. It was my second stay, and I’ll return if I’m back in Paje. I highly recommend it.☺️
