We booked Tango Beach Resort through a tour operator. The room was clean, everything worked, housekeeping came regularly, and the food was fresh, tasty, and varied enough, without serious queues. The main drawback is the location: despite the name, there’s no private beach. Paid beaches are about 3 km away in either direction, with hardly any nearby infrastructure, no cafes or restaurants, and no beach shuttle. Getting a taxi can be difficult too. Staying in Dar es Salaam and going to Coco Beach is much more convenient and less expensive.

The oceanfront location is superb and the hotel is nicely equipped, but it falls short of what I’d expect from a place calling itself four-star. On arrival, a porter loudly said something very inappropriate to a colleague. The room furnishings didn’t match, and the bright green pillows and bed runner clashed with everything else. There were no tissues, tea milk, or hangers, and the cheap-looking toilet brush was an eyesore. Dinner buffet was bland, overcooked, and forgettable. Breakfast was better, with some Swahili delicacies, but very little choice of fruit and cereal. It wasn’t worth the price.

The reviews made this look like a good choice for my planned week in Tanga, but I was surprised to find that calling reception to book directly costs almost double. I’d suggest booking through an app, even if you’re already in the country.

A great spot by the mangroves, with a lovely pool and plenty of space and activities to enjoy. The atmosphere and weekend vibe are hard to beat, and as a guest you can find things to do and have a good time.
