I felt completely safe wandering Stone Town, and really enjoyed my two nights there. Getting a little lost in the narrow, maze-like streets is part of the fun, with souvenir shops all around. Darajani Market is worth seeing for fresh fruit, fish, spices, and local goods, while Forodhani Gardens night market is great in the evening. There are lovely rooftops with Arabic and African-inspired decor, and the Freddie Mercury House makes a nice quick photo stop. Some tanzanite shops are worth a look, too. Stone Town is an authentic, vibrant place with plenty of charm, and well worth a night or two. It’s the oldest part of Zanzibar City and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The old buildings and beautiful architecture show a rich mix of Arabian and Portuguese influence. There’s a cathedral, Freddy Mercury's homestead, a spice market, and a night market, with plenty of local food to try.
