The views and people are what make The Golden Monkey special. At 7:30 in the morning, the mist can lift off Mount Muhubura right in front of you from the porch, and if Sheba is around, you might get to join a drum circle in the dining room. It’s a guest house, so don’t expect luxury, but the personal connections with staff and other travelers are lovely. The food’s good too: try the pancake instead of the usual rolex, especially pineapple, though banana and chocolate are options as well. The hamburger and pizza are good, and they can make Ugandan dishes like matoke, G-nut, common beans, and Muchomo. For coffee, the Coffee Pot is on the corner; Traveller's Rest nearby has better coffee and takes bookings for upscale dinners. The UWA office is just around the corner for permits to hike Sabinyo or Muhubura (4,1257 m or about 13,000 feet), or go gorilla trekking at Mgahinga. It’s also handy for Cyanika, the Rwanda border crossing, and places where Mountain Gorilla live.

For the price, it’s hard to expect more. Great little guesthouse, and the location is great too.

The location is handy, right in town and within walking distance of a supermarket, cafe, and restaurant. We also enjoyed the coffee tour and village walk, and Abel was a fantastic, knowledgeable guide. But the rooms were really poor. Some toilets had no water for showers or flushing, and although staff tried several times to fix it, the problem continued. The old bunk beds were uncomfortable, and our dorm barely had space for four people, let alone a day pack. WiFi didn’t work either. They said the whole neighborhood was down, which wasn’t true, and after we asked several times they got it working in about 30 minutes by topping up their data plan. The laundry service was a mess: some of our clothes went missing or got mixed up, and most came back soaking wet. When we raised it with the manager, they apologized but said it wasn’t their fault and seemed not to understand what we meant by dry. The boss agreed to meet and sort it out, then never showed. Very disappointing.

The rooms were nice, and the restaurant prepared a packed lunch for our hike. The hotel manager also arranged our guide for Mt. Sabinyo, which made planning easy. Everyone on staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. I’d recommend staying here.

Sheba arranged a hike up Mt Sabinyo for us, a once in a lifetime experience, and Enid was a fantastic guide for our coffee tour and trip to Lake Mutanda. We had a wonderful stay, with friendly, lovely staff throughout. The accommodation was clean and comfortable, and the food was good. Highly recommend.
