Trump Macleod House & Lodge

The surroundings are absolutely gorgeous, though you'll need a car since it's a mile's walk from MacLeod house to the Dunes Restaurant. The staff can drive you there, though. The beds are lovely, the staff helpful, the towels plush, and the bathtub's big enough for two average-size people to soak.

The fireworks display was amazing, and it was the best Hogmanay I've ever had! Every detail had been thought through, with stunning decor. The service was wonderful, the rooms spectacular and the food incredible. An outstanding hotel. I'll definitely be back.

We travelled all the way from Perth, a two-hour journey, to spend the night for my mum's birthday. We were looking forward to it, but now I'm just looking forward to going home. When we arrived, they couldn't find a booking for either the hotel or restaurant. The general manager seemed completely disinterested and sent a young girl to explain. She said that without confirmation, and with no rooms available, we couldn't stay. When I asked what we could do, she suggested booking another hotel, even though we'd already spent over £200 on the room we were told we couldn't have, a taxi from Aberdeen to the hotel, and the return train journey from Perth to Aberdeen. The most they offered was to pay for a taxi back into Aberdeen, where we'd be stuck without a place to stay or a train, since our return was booked for the following day. I asked to speak to the manager instead, but he showed no interest or care. I suggested paying for a taxi back to Perth or another hotel for the night, and he refused, saying it wasn't his fault, it was central reservations' fault and ours for not checking for the confirmation email. I went outside to calm down because I was furious by then. Other customers passing by agreed that the manager's lack of care was appalling and would make them think twice about staying. We had no choice but to accept a taxi back to Aberdeen. I pointed out that no one had even offered us a drink, and the young girl quickly ordered one while we waited. The bar staff were very friendly and attentive, possibly because they'd heard the situation unfold in reception. I've worked in hospitality myself, and the way this was handled was disgusting and showed a severe lack of care. From a hotel described as “high calibre”, that's shocking. I've been treated better in a Travelodge and similar “lower” standard hotels. If you want good service and a caring attitude towards customers, I recommend staying well clear.

The staff welcomed us so warmly, the breakfast was beautiful, and the rooms are something special. Honestly, it was the comfiest bed! Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. There are so many nice things I could say about this place. We'll absolutely be back, and I'd recommend it to anyone.
