We had a really poor night's stay in one of the lodges with a hot tub. It took hours to get above 34 degrees. I contacted reception, and manager Satish came out, but said they couldn't do anything and that it should heat up. After we discussed it, the best offer was a £100 refund. Wanting to enjoy what we'd paid for, we spent the next hour boiling kettles and pouring the hot water into the tub. It got warm enough for us to enjoy for about an hour, but the temperature dropped again while we were in it. The next morning it was at 40 degrees, so two of our party got in, but after 30 minutes it had fallen to 37. At checkout, we found the duty manager had cut the promised £100 refund to £50 without speaking to any of us. The apparent reasoning was that he saw us use the tub and it was at 40 degrees that morning. Guests shouldn't have to spend half an evening adding kettle water just to get some use from something they've paid for. Absolutely shocking behaviour from the manager at salthouse. I wouldn't recommend it as a staycation destination. There were other problems in the lodge, too. The downstairs toilet was missing its flush button, one bed hadn't been made up and had no pillows, a decorative pillow had a large stain, and the lock box didn't work properly for leaving the keys. The spa was also disappointing: just a few heated loungers and one thermal suite, less than you'd get at a leisure centre spa.

The staff were the highlight of our short break, friendly, eager and professional. I'd read some reviews and wasn't sure whether those concerns had filtered through, but the staff really were exemplary. The four of us found the chalet with jacuzzi comfortable and spacious, and dinner was excellent.

We stayed during Advent, when the hotel was beautifully decorated for Christmas. Both restaurants served excellent dinners. The sea views are stunning, and the hotel is in a great location. Our room and bathroom were large and clean. There's a free electric car charging station in the car park, and the hotel runs on its own wind turbine and a large photovoltaic system.

The deluxe facial was the real highlight for me. I've never had a better massage or facial, and I was practically floating around the room afterwards. The lodge was perfect, beautifully decorated, with incredible views. The restaurant food was amazing and came in big portions; all the staff were lovely, engaging, friendly and attentive. The spa facilities should be perfect once the work is finished. Can't recommend it enough. I'd go back every week if I could!

The food and service were both excellent when we went for dinner for two recently. I did ask to move because I dislike being seated in the middle of the dining room, but the waitress said there wasn't another option. I pointed out an unused table for two and was told it was allocated. Nobody used it during the two hours we were there, which I found really disappointing and took the shine off what was otherwise a nice evening.
