We checked into the Travel Lodge Barnsley on 1/5/26 for one night because it was near our venue. Before we went in, a man was leaving and complaining about his room. Ours smelled strongly of damp and what seemed like urine. The toilet seat and bath had urine stains, everything was dusty and dirty, and the mugs and spoons hadn’t been washed, with thick layers of what looked like old milk on them. My parents complained at reception, and the woman came up to see for herself. She agreed the bathroom was unacceptable and moved us next door after checking the room. That one had the same problems, maybe worse. When I asked about a refund because we planned to leave, she said she couldn’t help and told me to contact customer service. They said to fill out an online form. As we were leaving, she asked which Travel Lodge we were going to. I said the Holiday Inn down the road, and she tried to put us off by saying she’d heard it was really bad. It was actually a stunning hotel, with amazing staff, rooms and food, the best hotel I’ve ever stayed in. She shouldn’t have made up a lie about it. Travel Lodge Barnsley needs to do better. A refurb at the end of the year isn’t an excuse for being unclean or having no standards.

Really nice hotel to stay in, with friendly, helpful staff. It’s dog friendly too, and there are good walks nearby. Absolutely fantastic, highly recommend, 5*****

I reported fleas in the bed after getting covered in bites, but all they did was change the bedding, which didn’t solve it. I was worried about taking fleas home and had to throw away the clothes I’d been wearing. There were also lots of dirty paw prints on the bed, so it looked like pets had been in the room and it hadn’t been cleaned properly before my stay.

We’ve stayed here a few times without trouble because we have family nearby, but our one-night stay on 20th Sept was frightening. We arrived late with our two children and found the window open, presumably because the room smelled of wet dog. The family room bed nearest the window was soaked, so we asked to move. The man at reception was nice and had us in another room within 15 minutes. About 20 minutes later, while my husband was putting our son to bed by the window, there was a huge crash and the room shook. A car had hit the building hard enough to crack the wall and dislodge the windowsill. We were badly shaken because it could have been worse. By then the driver had moved the car into the car park. The receptionist was outside with her, and the driver, a hotel resident, seemed intoxicated, as if she’d been driving drunk or on drugs. He asked if we were okay and wanted to move us, but the kids were upset and it was very late, so we went back inside. Police weren’t called. About ten minutes later the woman knocked on our door, completely incoherent. I sent her away and we finally went to bed. At checkout, no one said anything until I mentioned it, then reception apologised. No refund was offered. I described everything in reply to the standard follow-up email and have heard nothing. The customer service is terrible. With an 8-year-old and an 11-year-old with me, not getting even a courtesy email or call to check we were okay was awful. Please don’t stay here, especially with children.

The room could really do with redecorating. There was mould on the window sills and at the bottom of the curtain. At least the beds were clean and white, and the desk and other surfaces were clean too. For what I paid, I can’t complain.
