The staff were polite and nice, and the bedding was clean. But the place felt neglected. We paid £100 for a standard double that looked nothing like the online photos. The door took a shoulder barge to open, the bed sloped down at the head, the kettle was on the floor, and there were ants in the bathroom. The receptionist kindly moved us to a “superior” room, but it was only bigger. My photos show how dirty and uncared-for things were, though there was no dust on the bedside tables or windowsills. The toilet didn't flush properly either, so they've got an unwelcome surprise to deal with. Free breakfast was advertised, but we only found out what that meant when we arrived: cereal, toast, individually wrapped pastries, tea, coffee and juice. My vegan friend had dry toast because there were no milk or butter alternatives.

Don't stay here. The rooms have mould, there's no hot water or heating, and only a few plug sockets work. It's badly run down, with stains on the walls and carpets, and there's no bar or restaurant.

The staff were lovely, and the room was fantastic, with a real sense of 12th century England. Breakfast was a classic continental spread. Just so you know, the restaurant is closed at the moment while work is being done. I'd stay again, 10/10.

It's cheap, but definitely not cheerful. The rooms are cold and unwelcoming, and the carpets need replacing, or at least a proper clean. It feels like nobody can be bothered to clean. The restaurant and bar are technically there, but guests can't use them, despite being advertised. Whoever owns the place now should either run it properly as a hotel or close it. I'm surprised the authorities haven't shut it down, and suspect it hasn't been inspected recently. I stayed years ago because it's near the motorway and handy for concerts at Blenheim. What on earth happened? It used to be a little gem with a lovely, tasty restaurant. Such a shame. Now it's yuk.

The restaurant and bar aren't open, the place looks as if it's never been updated, and it's dirty. There's only cold water and no heating. We asked for the heating because we were cold. It was switched on, then went off again shortly after. Breakfast is just cereal and toast, not a continental breakfast. It's such a shame for an old, historic building. The listing on Booking.com is totally misleading.
