There are plenty of pubs and places to eat nearby, and the room was huge, though very hot. The hotel has potential, but the reception, bar and lounge are badly dated and need a lot of money spent on them. They're building a new bar and reception area. The place was very dirty, which is a shame. The bath looked great but had no plug, there was no soap in the bathroom dispensers, and the window paint was peeling. The car park was being used as a builders' yard.

I booked single room 3. It was small, but perfectly adequate and good value. The room was clean and tidy, and seems to have been renovated fairly recently. The staff were excellent, and the stay was very good value for money. Highly recommended.

After our six-hour drive, we were shown to room 6, which looked all right but was freezing. My partner shut the windows, but the pub below and Main Street were still ridiculously noisy. The wardrobe door was hanging off, and the bathroom was filthy: cobwebs, large spiders, poo in the toilet, hairs on the toilet seat and sink, mould in the shower, and orange body fat. A missing window pane explained why the bathroom was so cold. When my partner complained, the young man at reception said it was too late to do anything, but offered a refund. We started looking for hotels nearby, then he offered another room if we came to see it first. We agreed, though we were apprehensive. It was nearly 10.30pm and we had to be up at 6am for my partner's competition. The courtyard room was like night and day, modern, bright and clean, with a great shower that didn't drain very well and a comfortable bed. No spiders, cobwebs or broken windows. We were out like a light and grateful they had another room, as finding somewhere else after a long drive and before an early start would have been a hassle. We would have left if they couldn't move us. At checkout on Sunday, the elderly gentleman said the courtyard rooms cost £70+ more than what we'd paid. I politely pointed out that if the room we booked had been fit for guests, we wouldn't be having that conversation. The hotel moved us, it wasn't our fault as guests. The lady who showed us the first room was pleasant enough.

We booked two single rooms for one night through Booking.com. We knew the hotel was among pubs, but the online photos looked nice. It became clear the pictures showed only a few rooms outside the main hotel. At check-in, an older male customer greeted me with, “Are you checking in or checking me out?” That set the tone. Both rooms were freezing and dirty. In the first, there were stained pillows, dirty floors, hairs in the bed, shower and around the toilet, plus mould throughout the shower and bathroom. The dust on the windowsill and windows was unbelievably thick. The second was much the same, with a boarded-up window, another smashed window with gaping holes onto the smoking area, and faeces in the toilet. We didn't feel comfortable taking our bags off, let alone sitting down. We went straight back to the bar and told the staff, who didn't dispute anything and gave us a full refund. That was the only positive.
