The Suncliff

The staff made us feel welcome as soon as we arrived. They were friendly, helpful, and spot on throughout. The building is older and could use some TLC in places, but that gives it character, and we thought it was great value for the price. We had a comfortable, pleasant stay. Our five stars are for the value and the experience, rather than luxury or the official star rating.

Room 207 has a great sea view, and it’s much bigger than a typical hotel room, with plenty of storage in matching modern wardrobes and drawers. The shower room is modern too, with a rain shower. I haven’t tried the restaurant because my schedule is tight. The general manager is a sweetheart, really helpful and informative about the local area. It’s a DOG FRIENDLY hotel, and luckily my dogs behaved lol

The lift was another problem: there’s only one, it’s extremely slow, and it has to serve four floors plus the basement restaurant. We waited several minutes for bar service too, and the bar wasn’t well stocked. Most of the staff seemed to have trouble understanding what we asked, which was very disappointing. The shared areas have had a lick of paint, but the sofas and tables are worn, some are broken, and there were holes in the ceiling. Breakfast was acceptable, though the buffet ingredients seemed very cheap. Waiting staff hovered and took plates, glasses, or mugs before people had finished eating. There was no silver service. The bedrooms were worse. Furniture was broken in most rooms, mattresses uncomfortable, paint flaking, and chunks of plaster coming off the walls. Even with the windows shut, a gale force wind seemed to get in, and the heating swung from sauna to freezer. Some rooms may have a loft hatch with no lock, so someone could get in from above. There were no door peepholes, and one bedroom smoke alarm was covered with a plastic bag. My strongest advice is to never visit this hotel.

The Suncliff Hotel – Oceana Collection works best if you care most about being by the sea and having a friendly welcome. It’s on Bournemouth’s East Overcliff Drive, a short walk from the beach, pier, gardens, and town centre, and some rooms have impressive sea views. Rooms with balconies or sea views are often the most comfortable. Staff are one of the hotel’s strengths, often described as approachable and ready to help. There’s an indoor pool, sauna, gym, and squash courts, plus access to outdoor pools at neighbouring Oceana hotels. The building shows its age in places. Some rooms and shared spaces have dated décor and worn carpets, with occasional maintenance problems. Many rooms lack air conditioning, safes, and fridges, and the WiFi can be unreliable. Cleanliness is usually acceptable, though some guests have reported issues in bathrooms and shared areas. Parking is available, but limited, and can feel expensive. It’s a simple seaside option that can offer good value if modern style and luxury aren’t priorities. Travellers looking for more contemporary décor or polished facilities may want to consider other places nearby.
