Avis Hotel

Room 21 was on the ground floor and had a shower, jacuzzi bath, fridge, microwave, and tea and coffee facilities. There’s parking out front on a quiet street. This small hotel/B&B has loads of character, was spotless, and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Our room had a table with four chairs, a kettle, fridge and microwave, plus plenty of plug sockets. The hotel is well maintained, has good facilities, and the staff were friendly and helpful.

The staff were friendly, and there were some useful things about the stay. We had a mini fridge, the TV was decent, and the big windows helped bring in air since there was no AC. Parking out front was free and easy, and they let us leave the car there for a few hours after checkout. When we came back for it that evening, they even let us use the toilets before our three-hour drive home. The area felt lovely and safe for walking in the evening, and Bromley High Street and the shopping centre were about a 10-15 minute walk away. But £160 for two nights felt steep, especially as breakfast wasn’t included. Our room seemed pretty run down. My boyfriend saw another room while the cleaner was there and said it was much bigger and nicer, with a normal bathroom. We were unlucky, I guess, but it was frustrating. I’d choose a different room if I stayed again, and the cheaper Bromley Premier Inn would probably have been a better option. There were a lot of problems with our room. No lift, no AC, and we could smell weed during our stay. The bathroom was tucked inside a closet and had saloon doors, so there was very little privacy. I felt too shy to use the toilet properly the whole time. It also felt uncomfortable showering when someone sitting on the bed could see through the doors. Such a strange design. If the bathroom has to be that small, a sliding door that covers it from top to bottom would make more sense. The shower leaked and sprayed forcefully out one side, soaking my whole head when I was just trying to wash my body. One of the light switches didn’t work and none of the lamps had working bulbs. The front door lock was awkward and took lots of jiggling to open. There also weren’t any transport links close by. Maps showed a fairly long walk to the train station, and we ended up taking a cab into London. Every time we called an Uber, the wait was about 10 minutes because the hotel is quite far out from everything.

I only gave one star because I had to. The floor was horribly dirty, the bedding was stained, and none of the pillows had cases when we arrived. The kettle was so grimy that we wondered if it had ever been cleaned. A fan had no back on it, and the plug sockets were coming away from the wall. The door didn’t lock properly, so we had to push the wardrobe in front of it. I honestly can’t understand how this place is still operating, and I’d never recommend it. I contacted the manager, but they didn’t seem interested.
