The location is great, but the stay was not enjoyable and didn’t feel worth the money. Our room wasn’t clean, staff were rude, parking was very limited, and breakfast the next morning was slow and basic in quality. When I spoke to the receptionist and showed photos of the cleanliness issues, she was patronising and unhelpful. Her explanation was, “we’re renovating rooms.” I understand renovations can affect cleanliness, but rooms with no signs of renovation shouldn’t be let if they can’t be kept clean. From 10pm to midnight the electricity went out, and an alarm beeped for those two hours. I called the number listed in the room information to find out what was happening. The “boss” shouted down the phone that he was “25 miles away and in bed” and asked what he was supposed to do. He told me to use the main number. I had already tried it, but no one answered after opening hours, and there’s no night porter. Their process clearly doesn’t work. I followed the instructions available to me, and the boss shouldn’t shout at a customer for that. I told the receptionist the next morning that the power cut itself wasn’t the issue, since it couldn’t be helped, but how I’d been spoken to was. Her apology was patronising too. The property rejected my dispute through the booking platform and isn’t willing to resolve this. I doubt they’ll take responsibility, and expect another patronising response. If you don’t have social skills or see the point in addressing complaints, maybe don’t work in a customer-facing job.

The slow-cooked beef cheek was so good that I asked whether the chef would share the recipe, and the staff said yes. I was absolutely blown away by the food and amazing service at the Pheasant this evening. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, and they made my 3-year-old feel noticed too, which a lot of places don’t do. I’ll definitely visit again.

A relaxed atmosphere and great food made for a nice meal out at this pub and restaurant, halfway up the hill in Burford. Service was a bit hit and miss: they forgot us a couple of times while getting distracted, so we had to wait for menus.

Saturday’s meal here was amazing, but Sunday was the complete opposite. My partridge with roast trimmings was so tough I had to send it back. The waitress offered me a sharper knife to cut it. Table service was really poor, with staff spending more time chatting than serving. We had to go to the bar for our drinks, as did the couple beside us, and another couple waited over 15 minutes before anyone asked if they wanted a drink. Really disappointing, especially after Saturday. We asked for the meal and service charge to be taken off the bill because we felt we hadn’t actually received service.

We were five friends having lunch on a wet Friday in December. The room was warm and comfortable, with a nice atmosphere, and service was friendly and efficient. We shared bread and olives to start, and all had one alcoholic drink. Those olives might sound like a small thing, but they were the best we’d tasted! The beef cheeks with mash and red wine jus and the fish pie with wilted greens were both really delicious. The diners having those dishes agreed they could have used a tiny bit more sauce or jus. The classic haddock and chips was beautifully cooked too, and the classic cheese and bacon burger was juicy with plenty of burger sauce. The bacon really stood out and made it extra delicious. Our bill came to just over £30 each.
