Macdonald Frimley Hall Hotel & Spa

The treatments were wonderful, and Antonella, my therapist, was so kind. She noticed my skin felt cold and understood when I mentioned the pool. She gave my cousin and me a free spa pass to return another day, along with a free coffee. The spa itself was clean, with a nice place to relax. The pool was freezing, though, and people kept going into the small sauna and steam room to warm up, so we often had to squeeze in. We had an afternoon tea mix-up, but it was sorted when I showed my receipt. The tea was lovely, simple and without frills, which I liked, and they let me swap some sandwiches. I'd recommend it, though perhaps go in summer when it's warmer.

The package was very good value: one night, dinner on arrival, breakfast the next morning, use of the pool, steam room, sauna and relaxation room, plus two amazing spa treatments. We couldn't fault anything. The room was clean, well equipped and lovely, with a very comfortable bed that made for a superb night's sleep. Just be aware that you have to leave the hotel to reach the spa. We changed into the complimentary robe and slippers there, then changed back before returning to our room. I'm not sure whether walking around the hotel in a robe is allowed.

The junior suite was huge and comfortable, with its own living area. Nidhi was great with communication and arranged the room decorations for my wife's birthday. The spa treatments were amazing, and Tasha provided excellent service. The restaurant staff were warm and friendly. The hotel is looking tired and needs modernising, and the sauna was small and only lukewarm, but the facilities were good overall and I enjoyed my stay.

The only real downside was the male receptionist, who was very rude when I locked myself out after leaving my card in the room. It took 15 minutes, including asking him to check the booking, before he gave me a new card. The hall is lovely, with rich design and a homely feel. The rooms are nice and a good size, and the grounds are amazing. My wife also found the spa relaxing.
