The Orange Tree

I've been coming here for years. The Kirkby Lonsdale brewery began here before they opened the barn, and it's a great real ale spot, with up to seven ales on tap and regular guest ales. Madge ordered me Ruskin's best bitter at 3.9%, which was lovely. Flatric was only on his second pub visit ever, so he went for Poretti. The lunchtime meals from 12 to 2 for £8.95 are good value. I've seen the place packed with rugby supporters, during a beer festival and when kids were celebrating the end of school. Evening meals are popular, and it's worth looking out for evening deals. I haven't stayed overnight, but friends did a few weeks ago and loved it. It's a Cask Marque pub, and the bespoke carpet is great too.

The last time we ate here, everything was first class, from the friendly welcome to the great food. This visit was a letdown. The staff weren't very friendly, and both the food and drinks disappointed. We asked for Coke but got some cheap, sweetener-heavy brown stuff instead. Gross. The food was utterly mediocre, and the pub seems to have lost its quirky, fun feel and fabulous food. Very sad.

A comfortable local pub with pub food. There aren't many seats in the bar, though the dining room has more space.
