The room was clean, comfortable and warm, and the location is perfect for heading north through the Highlands. I booked on my phone and hadn't realised breakfast came as a snack box rather than a buffet. At £5.95, it felt poor value. I travelled with my sons, and my eldest wouldn't eat his, so a helpful woman at the desk arranged a refund for that unused box and gave me a voucher for next time. I'd never stayed anywhere without a buffet restaurant, so I didn't know to check. Now I know what to expect, I'd happily come again.

The hotel is OK, clean, with fresh linen, and brilliantly located. We didn't try breakfast. I've seen earlier reviews about parking fines. Now guests enter their own registration number, so any mistakes are the guest's responsibility. My problem was the online booking. My Wi-Fi must have cut out, and when the page reset, it wiped the date box without me realising and selected a default day. I booked the wrong date. I asked to change it within seconds of spotting the mistake and was charged £12.50. That's unreasonable, even for a budget chain. The hotel itself was OK, but I won't use Travel lodge again, any Travel lodge. Be very careful with this brand, they'll fleece you if they can!

The parking validation system was broken, so we’re now expecting a parking fine. Several electrical outlets didn’t work either, leaving us unable to charge our devices. We had booked three rooms, and two smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. It was so bad that we got headaches and couldn’t sleep, and our five-year-old was especially upset and refused to stay in the room. There was visible black mold in the bathrooms, too. We told reception about the smoke, but spraying air freshener and airing the rooms while we were at dinner made no difference. They didn’t offer us other rooms. This stay fell far below an acceptable standard, and we won’t return or recommend the hotel. Management needs to address the cleanliness and maintenance problems urgently.

We were only here for one night, and the stay itself was very good. Now we’ve received a £100 parking charge, even though we registered the car correctly at reception. The manager says we have to sort it out with group nexus ourselves. It seems to be a communication mix-up between the two companies, and it has nothing to do with us.

The sheets smelled like they hadn’t been washed before we used them. The towels and shower curtain looked dirty, and they’d left a used toilet roll for us. The night staff seemed hostile, as did the housekeeping staff when we were checking out. Terrible service.
