The Grove

A quick breakfast meeting left me feeling I'd barely experienced The Grove Hotel. The grounds are expansive and beautifully kept, with a calm atmosphere that feels far from London even though it's just outside the city. The drive in is grand and polished, and the hotel clearly makes an impression. Breakfast was good and efficiently served, with everything you'd expect, though it didn't quite live up to the setting. Service was polished but a little formal, more slick than warm. It seems like a place best enjoyed with time for the spa, golf course, a long lunch, or a walk around the grounds. Leaving after breakfast felt like a missed opportunity. It's an impressive, top-tier venue, and next time I'd want more than a short visit.

The price is steep, but the staff really did their best to make the Christmas stay comfortable and memorable. The bed was comfy, the room temperature was adjustable, and I was glad to have a Nespresso machine since there are no cafes for miles. Breakfast was included and felt like an event, with cooked options including all sorts of eggs, meat, and Turkish food. The waiters even remembered our table and preferences. Christmas Eve by the fire-pit was lovely, with carol singers, mulled wine, hot chocolate, toasted cheese, marshmallows, and reindeer to stroke. Santa's grotto the next day was lovely too. We could use the gym, pool, and steam rooms anytime, and there were two cinemas showing films in the evenings. Walking around the huge grounds was refreshing. The library could be quieter.

Mitch gave me a wonderful massage during my half spa day. She was attentive and professional, explained everything clearly, and made me feel comfortable. Amelia at reception was also fantastic. After I dropped my van cleef necklace in the massage room, she quickly gathered all the keys so we could check every room. She took it seriously, and I found the necklace in the end, which was a huge relief. The package lunch was pretty mediocre, though, and that's why I'm giving four stars.

I've been coming for food and drinks for over 10 years, and the place still has its magic. The cosy pub feels warm and welcoming, while the Stable restaurant has a more mysterious charm and is worth booking ahead. There's a fashionable bar too, but I especially love the tucked away tea rooms where you can relax and switch off. The food and teas all feel thoughtfully done. Outside, the fireplaces, ponds, gardens, and fountains make it feel like a real escape.
