Winchcombe is a charming little town and a great base for walking and exploring the Cotswolds. The only small inconvenience was the lack of a pub car park. There’s a public one behind it, though, for £4 a day. We had a comfortable two-night midweek stay, with a pleasant, welcoming bar and dining area. The staff were superb: friendly, efficient, welcoming, and quick to handle requests or foibles. Karen is a gem and adds to the fun, though everyone was keen to help. The food was very good, from the wide cooked-breakfast choice to excellent dinner. Our visit happened to coincide with a supper club, which this time featured a three-course Portugal-based meal with matching wines. Great fun and delicious. We also got a discount through Butcombe Loyalty Club membership. All four of us agreed this is one of the best places we’ve found so far in our Cotswolds explorations. Highly recommended.

Dinner was a highlight, with delicious steak and pork and excellent cocktails to go with them. Breakfast by the fire the next morning was just as good, with plenty to choose from cooked exactly how we liked it. We were at The Lion for a birthday, and Alex and Sally welcomed us so warmly that we felt at home right away. The room was beautifully put together, with thoughtful touches and quality finishes. The Cotswold-style decor throughout was tasteful, cosy, and full of charm. Service was friendly, attentive, and efficient. We had a memorable stay and will definitely return.

The staff really stood out, they were attentive, cheerful and clearly worked hard. Breakfast was faultless too. Our room was the most basic one, but for a single night it had enough space, a clean shower room and plenty of hot water. It was nicely furnished and decorated. The Inn has a lovely old feel, especially in the bar and dining spaces. I’d rate it 4.5 if I could. It’s about a 15-minute drive from Cheltenham and close to lots of pretty Cotswold villages and towns. Happy to recommend it.

The Lion turned out to be great value for our two-night stay, especially as booking direct got us a good rate. We were welcomed with drinks vouchers, and when staff couldn’t find the key for the room we’d booked, they promptly moved us to an upgraded room. It’s a handy base for exploring the north Cotswolds. Our room was spacious and well equipped, breakfast was cooked to order, and the restaurant served generous, tasty food. Everyone we met was friendly, helpful and attentive. I’ll look for another Butcombe inn next time we plan a short break.

The Sunday roast was delicious, and sitting out on the terrace made for a lovely atmosphere. We turned up without a booking on the bank holiday Sunday while walking the Cotswold Way. The pub was full, but they found us a table in the beautiful back garden. Tom behind the bar was especially helpful, giving us plenty of ice and water for the rest of our walk without fuss. I’d happily recommend this pub.
