The spa was the main reason we booked, but it was crowded and loud, with too few chairs to sit on. There wasn’t much chance to relax. We spent one night here for my birthday, though it felt less like a hotel stay because our small, clean room was in a cottage in the courtyard, just outside the hotel. We also tried the nearby Indian restaurant recommended by the hotel, and I wouldn’t recommend it. The hotel itself was okay and the room decent, but it takes about 15 minutes to walk through the property before reaching the road. For the cost, I wouldn’t stay again. I guess with a place like this you’re paying for the name.

I arrived before check-in and was able to use the spa. They provided towels, the changing rooms were clean, and a mother and baby class ran for several hours without disrupting things much. My lakeside-view room was spacious and good value, and the reception and bar staff were very helpful. Breakfast was fantastic. Lunch in the trophy bar was pleasant, with nice staff and a very clean dining area. The Poke Bowl was tasty, but it had a LOT of crispy onions and edamame still in the shell, so getting the beans out was messy. It’s a salad, with no rice, which was a nice change from usual bar food, though £20 felt pricey for a bar-menu salad.

The setting is stunning, and the building is beautiful. Free use of the outstanding gym was a treat, and the pool and sauna were okay, though the pool area could use more regular cleaning. Breakfast was good, and the manager there welcomed everyone very personally. David greeted us with complimentary bubbles and was very friendly. Reception was welcoming too, but gave us the wrong dinner menus for the Valentine’s special. Once seated, we had an awkward conversation, decided against the set menu, and left for the bar restaurant. TVs in there take away from the building’s old-world charm. Dinner cost us a star: we waited 40 minutes, then the order came out wrong. Other tables got complimentary drinks, but we felt overlooked. A fire in the evening, a few more refreshments, and more professional staff would have made this a five-star stay.

The restaurant was way above par, and breakfast was amazing. Our room was clean and tidy, and we enjoyed the free gym and swimming pool. The building is huge and we got lost a couple of times, which added to the adventure. It could use a little updating here and there, but nothing major. We had a disturbance on the first night and received a refund for that night. Thanks again to the head of house for sorting it out. I’m pretty sure the gentleman’s name was David. The head of house also gave us a lovely welcome. The area has lush views and walks, and I’d like to come back in summertime. Would go again, and definitely give this place a try.

We came for a stress-free weekend, but spent a day avoiding a string of problems. The app’s room service order disappeared after we’d paid and waited 45 minutes, so we had to go downstairs to collect the food. When I asked for the service charge back, reception sent me to the restaurant, and the restaurant sent me back to reception, who said no. The double bed had a single duvet. They apologized and replaced it when we mentioned it, but all the apologies didn’t undo the experience. The food was average. The old building looks beautiful when you walk in, and I wish I had something more positive to say because the place has potential. But the rooms and hotel feel tired, and the friendly staff seemed confused about their own refund process. I wouldn’t recommend it, or rate it four stars. Two at best.
