About this property

Discover Chester's favorite venue, The Mill Hotel & Spa, a waterside destination in the heart of the Roman city. Enjoy complimentary parking and access to our 60-foot swimming pool, hot tub, steam room, and state-of-the-art Techno-gym. Our public bar, featured in the Good Beer Guide for the past decade, offers 16 rotating hand-pulled beers weekly. Originally built in c1830 as Griffith's Corn Mill, the hotel expanded in 2001 with the addition of the south wing, connected by an internal bridge over the Shropshire Union Canal. We offer five room grades, from Standard Rooms in the original Mill Building to spacious Club Class Rooms and the luxurious Champagne Suite in the South Wing. All rooms are en suite and include Sky TV and Wi-Fi. The Mill boasts extensive dining options. The award-winning, waterside Canaletto Restaurant serves lunch and dinner daily, offering both à la carte and table d'hôte menus, with Dine & Dance evenings on Fridays and Saturdays. The L'eau Cuisine, our broad-beam restaurant cruiser moored alongside the hotel, offers lunch and dinner cruises seven days a week, accommodating up to 50 people with a licensed bar and dance floor. Special events include Queen Mary Crown Cruises and Roman High Tea Cruises. The Brasserie Flambé Steak Restaurant (open Sunday-Thursday) serves various starters, main courses, desserts, and specialty flamed coffees. The Peppermill Trattoria, located on the ground floor of the south wing, is ideal for a light lunch after the gym, with a selection of sandwiches, baked potatoes, and salads. Finally, the Deli Bar in our Real Ale Bar offers traditional homemade bar meals.

The meal was tasty, and there were good choices at both dinner and breakfast. Staff were friendly and attentive, while the bar staff were quick and efficient. The hotel sits in a fantastic spot by the river and meadows, with lovely views, trees and wildlife. It was nice to see the original features and the wheel working inside.

There’s plenty to do in Sudbury, and I wish we’d had longer here. We stayed in a family room in the main hotel building, which had lots of space and a wonderfully comfortable bed. I slept soundly all night. Just note there’s no lift: our room was on the third floor, so getting luggage up involves a lot of stairs. The hotel has loads of character as a converted old watermill, and you can see the working wheel in the bar. There are old wooden beams and low ceilings in the rooms because of the building’s history. At 5'1" I was fine, but someone over 6ft might need to duck. Our room had a decent-sized TV, a kettle, a coffee machine and a shower, but no bath. WiFi is free, though you have to create an account to sign in. Check-in is at 4:00 PM and check-out is at 11:00 AM. We didn’t eat at the hotel because we were visiting friends, but the food I saw being served in the bar looked really appetizing. There’s also a mummified cat in reception with an interesting backstory. It’s cool, but worth knowing about if you’re superstitious.

The hotel building, bar and surroundings are beautiful, with a lovely setting by the pond and river, and cows nearby. We checked in to a room with a great view over the fields at the back. Later we met our friends for afternoon drinks on the terrace in beautiful sunshine. The cows, ducks and swans made for some great photos. Some maintenance was definitely needed in the rooms, and it wouldn’t be much to ask for a couple of bottles of water there. Even so, that wouldn’t put us off coming back.

We’ve just come back from a five-day coach holiday. The hotel is beautifully located, the meals were fantastic, and the staff were very pleasant. My one negative was room 5, which was noisy 24/7. I assume it came from the generators directly outside the window. Because of the noise, we couldn’t open the window either. I asked for another room, but was told the hotel was fully booked and a move wasn’t possible. Four nights of interrupted sleep isn’t ideal on holiday. I reported the problem to the manager and hope he has fixed it for other guests.
