The estuary setting is striking, especially with that bleak, slightly spooky view from the window, and there’s a car park. Everyone we dealt with was polite and friendly. Our family room worked well with two children for an overnight stop, and the coconut crumbed haddock at dinner was very nice. The grounds let the place down. There was junk in the wider green areas and broken glass in the afternoon, as if it hadn’t been cleared since the night before. In the room, we couldn’t control the temperature. It was cold until the radiator was on, then got hot enough to wake us. The bed felt springy, the duvet covers weren’t especially comfortable, and the TV remote was dirty. There’s no smart TV or Netflix access. Dinner was enjoyable, but the sticky toffee pudding came with highly processed vanilla ice cream with colouring, while the separately ordered vanilla ice cream was better quality and had no colouring. They changed it when we pointed this out, but the penny pinching seemed unnecessary. The restaurant isn’t cheap, so they could just charge another 50p. Breakfast also fell short. Most things, from the pastries to the sausage and bacon, seemed low quality or heavily processed. The orange juice tasted half water, and the only coffee was filter coffee that tasted like the cheapest cash-and-carry stuff. The owners should treat breakfast as an important part of the stay and bring its quality up to the level of the main restaurant if they want people to return.

We left the car at the hotel and walked to the seafront and Hill Road. There are lots of pleasant walks nearby, and the estuary views across to Wales are lovely. Our room looked out over the water too. It was a little dated, but warm and comfortable, and the staff were all friendly and helpful.

Would I stay at Walton Park again? Probably yes, though the hotel does have its flaws. The weather makes a big difference to the room views: they’re delightful when it’s clear, much less so otherwise. We booked dinner, bed and breakfast, and the dinner allowance was generous. The staff were cheerful, helpful and quick to respond. I had a problem with the bed linen, but they sorted it out straight away and were good spirited about it. They also covered our drinks that evening, which I appreciated, though I hadn’t asked or expected them to. Breakfast was generous and had a well-stocked selection of traditional English food. As other people have said, try the sausages. They serve filter coffee rather than pod or espresso, which I was glad about. The evening menu is the part I’d most like management to rethink. It felt like a pub menu from the 2000s. My late Mom would have liked it, but all the meat I had was overcooked. My wife was happy with her chillis and curries. I was disappointed that there wasn’t a medium or rare burger. I won’t eat a dried-up hockey puck, so I chose something else. I’d suggest asking the Chef what he’d do, or even getting a menu consultant. The dinner allowance is £30, and you’d have to really pig out to spend all of it. It’s an old hotel, like much of Clevedon, and that’s part of its character. Our sea view room had new, very comfortable beds and new opening windows. It had been rewired and there were plenty of power outlets. I was surprised that the WiFi was fast and worked well, though it helped to log out and back in now and then when the connection slowed down. There were plenty of parking spaces during our stay, but I can’t say what it’s like in summer. The place is a bit tired in other ways, and the 1970s Artex doesn’t help. Getting rid of it would be a nightmare, though. It’s a three star hotel, and I don’t think they try to hide the building’s age, which has a charm of its own. While we were having a drink before dinner on our first night, my wife said it reminded her of Fawlty Towers. Someone else has made the same comparison.

The view is beautiful from an ocean view room, though it gets VERY windy by the sea and can be really loud. The hotel is close to Clevedon restaurants and the pier, with a small parking lot and tight spaces. The building is very old and the rooms feel dated. Our bathroom had A LOT of mold in the toilet tank and on the wall behind it. The beds were very bouncy, and the pillows were super thin and hard. The blow dryer didn’t work. Staff were generally friendly, but seemed annoyed when we raised an issue with the toilet.

This worked fairly well as a stopover for cyclists, and the bikes were secure, though they don’t really cater for bikes beyond storing them in the hotel office. The food was mediocre but good enough. Our room felt a little tired, but had an excellent view across the channel to Wales. A lady let us have breakfast early because we needed an early start, which was helpful and much appreciated.
