After an interesting crossing from the mainland, this was such a welcome stop. We came in for lunch with our baby and two dogs, and the staff were polite, welcoming and very accommodating. The fire was on, which was lovely on a chilly day. We had the seafood chowder with seasoned fries, plus a Cajun chicken burger. My husband didn’t share his burger, but the chowder was absolutely delicious, with plenty of fish and mussels and a great portion size. We didn’t need a room this time, but if we do, this will be the first place I contact. Very glad we popped in.

We stayed here twice during our coastal walk around the Isle of Wight, and it was very good value. The rooms aren’t huge, but they’re comfortable and have what you need, including a coffee machine. The town’s main car park is just around the corner, so access was easy. Breakfast was really nice both mornings. On the first day a very sweet, polite lady served us, and the full English was perfect before a 20-mile walking day. The next morning, a guy we assumed was the owner gave us equally good service and seemed like a good bloke. When we first arrived at The Union, an older bald man in the bar stared at us for ages in a pretty menacing way. It wasn’t the staff’s fault, and honestly we found it funny. No harm done, and it gave us something to laugh about. Of the five places we stayed on the island, this is one of the good ones I’d be happy to return to, so I’m glad to recommend it.

I’ve never left a bad review before, but I wouldn’t eat here again. We waited nearly an hour for food. Two soups and a sandwich arrived first, and the soup was cold. The Sea Bass came out cold too, and I don’t think the vegetables had even been heated. When we sent it all back, we could hear the chef throwing things around in the kitchen. The bar lady was very apologetic. They also forgot one meal and said we hadn’t paid, but I showed the receipt and it looked like we had. Then the original three meals came back, followed by a steak pie. About 10 minutes later, the missing baguette arrived so hot I could barely pick it up. They offered us free drinks, but we just wanted to leave. It’s a nice pub, but I wouldn’t eat there.

We came in for a Friday fry-up and it was excellent value, £5 for a full English, with a large one just £2 extra. The vegetarian option was just as good. Charis was polite and efficient, and her lovely personality made the visit even better. Great breakfast, we’ll definitely return.

We stayed Saturday 20/9/25 and have already booked again for NYE. Check-in was easy, the room was beautiful and clean, and it had everything we needed. The staff were lovely, and owner Matt made us feel welcome. Breakfast was excellent too. We’ve taken lots of breaks, and this was one of the best. Thanks!
