We stayed overnight as a business group of four while working locally, then held a business dinner for seven in the bar and restaurant. The Tufton Arms Hotel sits on the Market Square in a beautiful old building, with a relaxed, traditional feel. The bar was comfortable and worked well for hosting our guests. The hotel was flexible and helpful with the practical details. We arrived early in the morning and the hosts and proprietor were welcoming and attentive throughout. They even offered to drive us to and from a farmhouse venue some distance away for our daytime workshop, which took a logistical headache off our hands. Our rooms were comfortable and well appointed, and the service was friendly and practical. Dinner went very well. The team clearly know and care about local produce, and the wine selection stood out. The proprietor buys parcels at auction, so there’s an unusually wide range of interesting bottles alongside the main list. Breakfast the next morning was freshly cooked with excellent ingredients and plenty of choice. I especially enjoyed the soft scrambled eggs, proper back bacon and good toast. Warm, enthusiastic hospitality, strong food and wine, and a characterful place. I’d return in a flash. (Visited February 2022)

After a 20 mile day on the Pennine way, this was an excellent place to recuperate. The owner was incredibly helpful and even gave me a lift back to the start of the way after breakfast. All the staff were friendly and attentive. I’d certainly recommend it and stay again.

I enjoyed my stay at this lovely hotel. Great staff who really go above and beyond.

The old building has creaking floors, but that adds to its charm. Our room, #10, was at the front and had a large window that let in plenty of light. The furniture was dated, though it suited the hotel’s character. The bathroom looked new, the room was clean, and the bed was so comfortable we slept well both nights. We had a drink in the bar, and the prices weren’t high. Breakfast was hot and plentiful, with plenty of choice. On the first morning we had the full English, with eggs, sausage, bacon, mushrooms, beans and black pudding. The next day I had sourdough with salmon and scrambled eggs, a lovely lighter breakfast. We had a lovely two night break, and all the staff were friendly.

Saturday 18 January 2025. This is a really beautiful hotel with a great atmosphere, lovely bar staff and a good clientele. The main drinking foyer was busy, and the gentleman serving beer and spirits behind the bar was very pleasant. There was only one hand pumped ale available, which is why I’ve given four stars instead of five. The Lake District ale was a nice pint, though.
