The rooms are amazing, and the mix of old and new is genius. The location is quaint, the food was good, and the staff were amazing. During my visit, though, things seemed to be in flux. The team did everything they could to make it a great stay, but three front-of-house staff were covering the hotel, bar and everything else. They were working at full tilt and still couldn't meet customers' needs. Marstons, please invest in more staff here. I can only assume this comes down to corporate cost cutting. Give the team a raise and hire more people from the community so they don't have to go through this again.

We had a lovely meal in the bar, with good menus, including the Christmas specials. A couple of Pedigree went down well too. Breakfast was cooked to order, with a nice omelette, black pudding and coffee, served by great staff. The setting by Swarkestone bridge is beautiful, with wonderful sunrise and sunset photo opportunities, as well as the bridge itself. Check-in was quick and easy thanks to the lovely receptionist. The room was cold on arrival, really cold, and the heating should be on before guests get there. It's a bit dated and needs a decor refresh, but the bed was so comfortable and the shower was powerful, if a little erratic in temperature. I'll definitely use it again. Thank you.

Christmas breakfast was a treat: smoked salmon and Prosecco to start, then a great classic breakfast and a continental spread. Dinner on arrival was lovely too, and the place was buzzing. The chocolate brownie and dome were especially good. Watching hot salted caramel sauce poured over it and the dome melt was quite a show. The staff were absolutely brilliant, and head office should know how well they looked after us. We had a very spacious family room for three, and the team were attentive without hovering. This was my third stay, and I won't choose anywhere else when I travel to Derby. Highly recommend.

The room was clean, spacious and warm, with everything I needed, and the bed gave me the best night's sleep. There was no noise from either the restaurant or car park. Dinner and breakfast were lovely, hot and fresh, with lots of choice. Every staff member was friendly and welcoming. Booking directly with Marstons was easy and got me a great deal, and the service was excellent from booking through checkout. Sadly, we only had one night. It was one of my best stays, and I definitely plan to return. Thanks to all the staff, you were great.

The staff were welcoming and friendly, the room was comfortable, and breakfast was delicious. The bathroom felt a little cold because there was no double glazing, and road noise might bother some people. I slept very well, though, and was really happy with the stay.
