The Christmas pudding was probably the best part of our meal, and the salmon starter was a decent size, though it was just slices of salmon on a plate. The turkey was okay, but the gravy was salty and the potatoes, while cooked, weren’t crispy at all. We were 20 for Christmas dinner in a beautiful, warm, cosy building with fires lit and a very festive feel. The service, though, was basically absent. Our food had been pre-ordered, but nobody asked about drinks, the food or sauces. With such a large table, we couldn’t easily get up to fetch drinks, so that was pretty unacceptable. The cost felt high for the quality and portions. If service had been good and the starter, gravy and potatoes had been better, I’d have given it four stars. There’s work to do.

On my second visit, I had the fish and chips for lunch. The fish was thick and tender, and the batter was delicious without being overpowering. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. You can drive past if you dare, or pop in and treat yourself.

A lovely old worldy pub, with good food and a cosy bedroom. The bed was really comfortable, the shower was good, and the staff were helpful.

The food was great, although we were only there for breakfast. Tessa gave us a great welcome, and our room was comfortable. The setting is beautiful, and I’d recommend making the detour to stay. The bathrooms could maybe use a little updating. We’d love to visit again.
