The Old Mill

There isn’t much nearby if you fancy a morning walk, though the Old Mill is only a couple of miles from the A1. Our rooms weren’t the biggest I’ve stayed in, but they were very clean and had what we needed. All six of us enjoyed the food and the general atmosphere, and the staff and service were excellent. It was our first stay, but we’ll come back. Good value, too.

The portions were generous and delicious, and the food had that first class gastro pub feel. Cosy place, with welcoming, friendly staff. Really impressed, and well worth a visit.

There’s plenty of parking at this lovely pub, just off the A1M near Bishop Auckland. It has a good atmosphere and old world charm. The food was average and prices a little above average, but I’ll visit again.

We usually love eating at the Old Mill, but this visit was off. The meal itself was fine, and the young waitress who served us was pleasant. We were happy to move into the main restaurant after first being seated in a huge, starkly lit back room with no atmosphere and nobody else dining there. We’d been told the place was busy and they don’t take bookings for parties under eight, so we knew getting a table could be pot luck. At first, we were told we could wait for a table to be cleared. Then another waitress, who had seated us in the back room and seemed quite nippy, reluctantly offered to join three small tables together. We took that option and moved. The worst part was the gents’ toilet. My husband came out with wet, smelly shoes after stepping into what he said was a flooded urinal. There was no warning sign, and he’d already walked through it before he realized. Not sure we’ll go back.
