Mercure Exeter Southgate

The location is great for the Christmas markets and shops, and the team made our stay lovely. I’d accidentally booked a double instead of a twin, but they sorted it out without fuss, even though it was my mistake and they were busy that weekend. Everyone was accommodating and happy to help. Our room was spotless and spacious, with a handy fridge. The bathroom was big and had a lovely walk-in shower. Thanks, Mercure!

Breakfast had loads of choice, and the staff were attentive and efficient. Pak Eko was especially helpful. The service from Ibu Amel was also outstanding. When we checked in, she noticed my request for special wording on the glass for my parent’s birthday and surprised us by sending a cake to the room. The writing was beautifully done, well beyond what I expected. Thank you.

Breakfast was nice and the staff were lovely, but the room was far too hot. We arrived late and were told the heating and AC were broken in some rooms, with a heater and fan available. Our heater was on when we got in, and even with the windows open the room was stuffy. We were on the ground floor by the car park, so people walked past all night, and the windows rattled when open. The decor felt tired too. We paid what seemed a lot for one night because we booked last minute, around half term and Valentine’s Day. The pool was fine for a swim, but the changing room showers were tiny and hard to move around in. The sauna was a good temperature, though the whole place felt worn out. It seemed to need investment, and at that price I expected much more.

Lucy welcomed us warmly and was friendly and helpful. We were meeting friends, so had a couple of drinks in the bar, then enjoyed an excellent breakfast with a great choice the next morning. Victoria in the Dining Room was friendly and helpful too. The hotel is in central Exeter, with parking, and we’ll certainly stay again. Next time we’ll bring our swimmers and use the Spa.
