I work for a large company, and we regularly use Premier Inn for staff accommodation. Several recent stays at this location have raised serious concerns about cleanliness. More than one staff member arrived to find a very strong urine smell in their room. It was so overwhelming that some didn’t feel comfortable taking their clothes out of their bags. That’s disappointing, especially for business travel. We hope it’s dealt with promptly, since it affects whether we continue using this hotel.

The check-in was quick, and staff were friendly and helpful at breakfast. There was plenty of parking, and the location suited us for an event nearby since we didn’t want a city centre hotel. The room was clean and the bed comfortable, though both were less spacious and comfortable than at other Premier Inns. TV reception was poor, so there were very few channels. The corridor smelled musty, and the place felt basic. The Beefeater bar shut at 10pm, which was a shame as there were no other pubs nearby for a nightcap. Breakfast was the bigger issue. The vegan options were poor and still cost full price, with none of the variety of yoghurt and croissants available to other guests. The sausage was inedible, and the vegan bacon had a strange chemical taste. I was told they’re now precooked. The mushrooms were dry and shrivelled, apparently because of how they’re cooked, and the baked beans arrived cold. I’ve eaten at other Premier Inns where the food was much better. Staff tried to help by cooking more, but it was still horrible. It’s advertised as unlimited breakfast, but it’s no longer a buffet and is served on a plate at your table. I won’t stay here again. There are much better places in Topsham or the town centre.

The free parking was a big plus, and it’s handy for getting into Exeter. Staff were welcoming and helpful throughout my pleasant stay at Premier Inn Exeter (Countess Wear) hotel. The room was clean and comfortable, with the usual comfy bed. I’d happily come back.

Although the location worked well for me, I won’t return. The hotel is tired and needs refurbishment. My room had a damp problem, as did several others, and they plainly need to be taken out of commission. I’ve stayed at Premier Inn hotels all over without any problems, but this one threatens the brand’s reputation.
