I booked just two hours before arriving, and they already knew the room had no heating. With snow outside, I still had only a small plug-in heater and was freezing under the duvet fully dressed. I had to ask for another one, then collect it myself because there were no staff around. The first night there was so little hot water that I boiled the kettle several times to run a hot bath. Then the power went out on the second floor, where my room was. There was no electricity or heating, and the WiFi was affected too, while nearby properties still had power. They blamed the UK power supply, which didn't seem right. I was told to wait about an hour and could go to the bar, but I'd have to pay cash for drinks, so I went out in my car. Ninety minutes later the power still wasn't back. Drinks were free by then, but it was 9pm, I'd been awake since 4am, and I was already tired and upset after coming because of a problem at home. I asked to move to a room in the part of the building with power, but they said they couldn't arrange that. I was in tears when I checked out and asked for a refund. They said they'd process it once the electricity was back and their system was working, hopefully in a couple of hours. The next morning I emailed to ask for a full refund, taking the cold room, hot water problem, and distress into account. I've sent numerous emails and still had no reply. booking.com hasn't managed to get a compromise from the hotel either. Be warned, it doesn't look like booking.com can adjudicate a case like this, though I did get a token £17 on account from them. Who thinks it's acceptable not to refund someone for a night they didn't stay when there was snow outside and no power or heating? At the very least, they should have refunded that night without making me ask, as a goodwill gesture. The place is tired and needs refurbishing. The electrics seem archaic and need replacing, and there weren't even USB ports in the room. They should not have taken my booking, but they were obviously keen to take my money.

The lobby was quite nice, which made the state of our room all the more disappointing. It was cold in December, with no working heating. They gave us a little portable heater, but it barely took the chill off, and I couldn't shower because the room, especially the bathroom, was freezing. The furniture looked second-hand, cleanliness was questionable, and the bathroom reminded me of a Stephen King movie. The hotel may have potential, but in its current condition I wouldn't recommend it.

For the price, this was a friendly, pleasant hotel and everything else was perfect. The room was the weak point, so I'd give it 3 stars: the shower pressure was low, and there was an issue with the heating system, though every room had an electric heater.

The outside looked great, and the lobby was clean and tidy. To be fair, the staff were pleasant. The room, though, was absolutely horrendous. There was no working heating on the coldest evening of the year, just a small convector heater. The old, disgusting bathroom had a shower head that seemed to have been around since Noah and his ark. The carpet was stained enough to make you think someone had spilled milk all over it, and the bed's mattress felt cheaper than any I've ever tried to sleep on, taking me back to a stay in Skegness 44 years ago. Trying to sleep with the kitchen extractor ducting running right past the window was unbelievable. When I opened it, I saw pigeon mess along the sills and on the flat roof by the kitchen skylights. People here say it's been updated, but this room was like a storeroom. I didn't eat there. My hands were too frozen to hold utensils, so I found some comfort in a bottle of Scottish malt. Thanks to my employer for booking this for me. It was a trial I passed.

Nice place, but the rooms need checking before they're handed out. I had to change rooms when I arrived because the TV didn't work. The new room was recently renovated, but it had missing light bulbs, no toilet brush, no heating, and a cold shower. Someone needs to do a proper quality check.
