The Redhurst Hotel

The copper bath, the reason we paid so much for the Garden Suite, was unusable. The hot water in both the bath and shower was barely warm, and bathing in it would have been uncomfortable and unsafe. We booked for Christmas Eve and left in under an hour. The duty manager said nobody was available to fix it, which I understand for Christmas Eve, but there was no real sympathy or effort to find another solution. He said he couldn't call an emergency tradesperson because the thermostat showed no error. The receptionist brought a kettle, but filling a bath that size that way would have taken all night. We've looked forward to staying in the Garden Suite each year since it opened, so we were really disappointed. It's worse that nobody followed up afterwards: no call, no email, nothing. I waited a month before writing this, giving management a chance to call, and I'm still waiting. The lack of care and professionalism says it all. Very poor, and we won't be back.

Breakfast was excellent, with continental options as well as a hot menu, and the staff were warm and welcoming. The hotel was modern and very clean. We had a really enjoyable two-night stay, with plenty of parking and an ideal location just a short drive from the city centre. We'd definitely come back and would highly recommend it.

We barely slept. My wife and I booked a getaway hoping to catch up after having three children, but our room was directly over the dance hall, and the party went on until 1:30 am. We didn't know about the room's location until the wedding got going. The night receptionist was no help, and there were no other rooms to move us to. We checked out at 7:30 am and drove back to Edinburgh to catch up on sleep after an even more disrupted night than we're used to. The hotel looked great on arrival and the staff seemed fine, but we couldn't get into the bar because a wedding was on. It's a wedding venue, so that's fair enough, but it would've been nice to know when booking. A couple of days later I called to speak with the manager, who wasn't in, and was promised a call back. Nothing came. I emailed a week later and was told the manager was on holiday and they'd get back to me, but again there was no response. It's a shame, because this hotel could be a great place to stay and eat, but the manager is clearly incompetent. If you're booking, check whether there's a wedding on or you might not get a good night's sleep.

Our wedding turned out exactly as we'd dreamed, and we're forever grateful. Lorraine, Amy and the team made the whole day feel magical and professional from beginning to end. Everyone was outstanding and so helpful. Amy and Lorraine, you're both stars. You made me feel calm as well as beautiful, and I honestly wouldn't have chosen another venue. Love, the new Mr & Mrs York
