For a city break, this worked really well as somewhere to recharge between sightseeing. It’s quiet, and close to both the station and the city centre. The room was simple but cosy, with a tiny private bathroom that was still practical. They’d put out towels, a bathrobe and little toiletries, which was handy when I’d travelled with just one small bag. The staff were really friendly and helpful.

The Superior Double was comfortable, and the modern en-suite was spotless. I was there overnight for work this week and found the reception team lovely. It’s a cosy hotel, with a little honesty bar by reception that’s a nice touch. I’d happily stay again.

The Castle Deluxe Room had towels and sheets that looked old and worn, and the service throughout felt disorganized. Breakfast had been ordered for 08:00, but it arrived around 08:20, leaving me rushed before my 09:00 meeting. It seemed like one person was doing both the cooking and cleaning, so things moved very slowly. At checkout, the receptionist was outside smoking. I waited a few minutes, and when I went out to find him, he seemed not to hear me, possibly because he was on the phone or listening to music. When I finally checked out, I paid £15 for breakfast and was told everything was settled. Nobody asked for the key, but later I was charged £35 for it. I feel that could have been avoided if the checkout process had included asking me to return it. That unexpected charge left a bad impression.

The location is peaceful, about a 15-minute walk uphill from the town centre and its restaurants. We had a good stay. The rooms are basic, but clean and nicely presented, and the staff were welcoming and friendly. I’d have preferred to choose breakfast on the day instead of having to order it the night before.

We were passing through England on our honeymoon and spent two nights here. I’d booked back in March and mentioned the occasion in the comments, so it was lovely to arrive and find little tissue-paper hearts on the bed. The service and food were exceptional. I only wish we’d had more time to stay.
