I loved this hotel, but had a ghostly experience in room 140. Do you believe in ghosts? Back in 2014, I was at a union conference at the Studley Hotel in Harrogate. I was lying on the bed in room 140, talking to my wife on my mobile, when flashing orbs suddenly appeared over the curtain rail by the window. Then I distinctly heard a voice say, “Not now.” The orbs vanished straight away. I told my wife what I’d seen and heard immediately. The next day I told the receptionist, who said it wasn’t the first time people had reported ghostly experiences in that room. Three months later, I was hiking with my family in the Lake District, climbing Walla Crag near Keswick. My daughter accidentally knocked a large rock loose. It rolled straight down the hill and nearly hit my head. My wife screamed my name, then for no reason said, “Not now.” We both immediately connected it to what had happened earlier.

We had a pleasant one-night stay in an Executive room. The hotel is right in the city centre, with everything a short walk away, and parking for the day cost £12. The room was clean, modern and spacious, with a good-sized TV, ironing and tea and coffee facilities. The bathroom had a bath and a standing shower. The hotel feels luxurious, the decor is pleasant, and the staff were polite and attentive. The bed was the one disappointment. It was advertised as king-sized, but was two singles pushed together. Usually that wouldn’t bother me, but I chose the pricier room specifically for a king-sized bed. At checkout I was told only Executive Superior rooms have proper king-sized beds. The room cost £119.

Great location. The restaurant looked lovely, and the shower was great. I only stayed one night. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and although the room felt a bit old-fashioned, it was very clean.

We slept well in a lovely bed, and the location was brilliant. But the room was cold, the shower flooded the bathroom quite alarmingly, and we could hear every footstep and every door slamming from the neighbouring rooms as if they were right beside the bed.

The hotel is ideally placed for town, and the room was clean and pleasant, though dark and dull in its decor. We had a four-poster bed, but the duvet cover didn’t fit properly. A couple of odd things happened: a small plastic box fell off the dressing table by itself, then while my husband was in the bathroom, a shampoo bottle fell from the shelf onto the floor on its own. It was very strange. We mentioned it to reception, but they’d had no previous reports.
