The staff were attentive and the service was good, and I liked both the room and the restaurant. Getting to Hertford House is a bit awkward because it seems to sit in a pedestrian area, with the one-way road blocked by flower beds. There is wheelchair-accessible multi-storey parking about a three-minute walk away.

The staff deserve credit: everyone worked hard, handled problems quickly and professionally, and Terry got the manager to approve a full refund after I calmly explained what had happened. I hadn't expected even half my money back. I was told the hotel had recently been bought and that many issues were due to be fixed. I hope they keep the staff, who were possibly the best I've dealt with at any hotel. There were plenty of problems with the stay itself. On the second night I tried to run a bath in the adjoining room they'd unlocked for us, but it filled only a quarter of the way before the water turned completely cold again. The first night's shower kept switching between hot and cold, so I couldn't wash without freezing. The room looked beautiful and was large, but the bed was so uncomfortable, like a door with stones on it, that I hardly slept. The single-glazed windows let in noise from the bars and 24-hour traffic. I don't know if that's because the building is listed, but an inner window might help. One window had rot in a corner and cracked glass, and there was a bath stain that wouldn't wipe away. It also isn't cheap. Despite the looks and the staff, I wouldn't stay again.

We were there for a wedding, and it was the cheapest option for one night without a Premier Inn or Travelodge, though I thought it cost a bit much for what you got. The room was clean and roomy, but could do with an update. Our single-sash window faced what I think was the pub next door's smoking area. I like banging beats, but the Saturday night noise kept me awake until the festivities ended. Might be fine if you don't mind hearing what Rebecca and Kate got up to in the beer garden. Breakfast was edible and okay. We ordered two full English breakfasts without eggs because I don't like them, or mushrooms because I'm allergic. Each had a sausage, one bacon slice, sourdough toast, a small ramekin of beans, half a tomato and a square hash brown. Nothing seemed seasoned, so it was a bit bland.

Ellis and I were both comfortable during our two-night stay at Hertford House Hotel in Hertford between Christmas and New Year 2025. My room was a good size, very clean, and had lovely Bramley toiletries. The bed was super comfy, and Ellis had his own bed and dog bowl. He didn't make a sound all night. The HHH team were kind and helpful from the warm welcome onward, and made a real fuss of him. One staff member even took him for a walk while I had dinner with family, and another brought him a freshly cooked sausage at breakfast the next morning. I'd happily recommend Hertford House to people visiting town, especially with a dog. Add HHH to your dog-friendly places to stay list. 10 out of 10.

The food was decent, but Georgina's breakfast service today was so poor that I won't be coming back. From beginning to end she was rude, moody, miserable, and no help at all. She ought to find another job.
