The countryside around the lodge is stunning, but the stay was awful. The rooms are so enclosed and poorly ventilated that the silicone smell from the shower repair gave me a headache. It was still there after the two days I lasted. I paid for five nights, left after two and moved to a hotel. I work away a lot, and this was one of the worst places I’ve stayed. I should’ve listened to the earlier reviews. Such a waste of money. On arrival, I found the front door open and the handyman applying sealant around the shower. I’d been up since 3am, had worked through a hot day and was looking forward to washing and resting before the next day’s work. Instead, I was told I couldn’t use the shower. I’d received a text at 4pm saying the room was ready, with the entry details. The basics were poor too. The bed was old, the pillows had no firmness and were mismatched, and the mattress had mould stains. When I finally tried the shower late that night, steam revealed fingerprints and handprints all over the bathroom. It hadn’t been cleaned properly. They said the cleaner would come the next day, but when I returned from work at 7pm the following evening, the bathroom still hadn’t been cleaned and the silicone smell remained. My frustration went through the roof. The walls seemed paper thin. I could hear everything next door, including footsteps on creaking floors and snoring. After I complained, there was no apology or offer to reduce the price. Other small problems: the shower head wouldn’t stay in its holder, and the bathroom door had been badly painted.

The room was £81 with breakfast, which felt a bit overpriced. The £6 continental breakfast was just slices of bread and egg or a croissant. My fridge didn’t work, so the milk and orange juice were warm. It’s quiet, but in the middle of nowhere, so you’ll need a car and have to drive into town for food and drink. There’s no kitchen sink, and filling the kettle from the bathroom sink was awkward because it wouldn’t fit properly. I could’ve called the 24 hour number to complain, but it felt like the sort of room you use once when you just need somewhere to sleep.

The internet was shockingly slow, slower than dial up, though luckily the mobile signal was good. That’s why I’ve taken off a star. I stayed while working in the area. It was clean and warm, the bed was comfortable enough, and I slept well. It wasn’t the most comfortable bed I’ve had, but it was fine. There are some bad reviews, but at about half the cost of a good hotel, I thought it was great value.

The bed was comfortable, but that’s about all I can say for the place. It was damp and mouldy, and the milk and coffee sachets were out of date. The walls were so thin I could hear next door, and there was even a gap in the wall where I could see their light. For this level of luxury, I might as well have stayed in my garden shed. I won’t be back.

We won’t be going back, which is a shame because we have some good memories here. We used to love the place and visited once or twice a year from when it was fairly new. It’s in a quiet spot and used to feel like good value, a little home from home. These days it feels tired and smelly, and costs too much.
