The Barrel Inn

That view is something else. We drove just over an hour and 15 minutes from home, combining the trip with Bakewell and Chatsworth, and it made for a lovely detour. Thanks to Kalani TGH for the social media tip, or we might never have come this way. We booked ahead, which was lucky because it was really busy at lunchtime. The steak pie in hot water pastry was scrumptious. We couldn't eat it all, but every bite was delicious. The meat was beautifully cooked, and even the small side of bright green greens was tasty and not overdone. Service was quick and efficient, but we never felt hurried. A gem, and we'll visit again.

Our nearby host suggested The Barrel Inn, and we're so glad we went. The food was one of the best meals we've had, and the sausage with bubble and squeak is especially worth trying. Dogs aren't allowed, which wasn't a problem for us, but it's useful to know if you're travelling with one. We'll definitely return.

The surroundings were striking, and I imagine they'd be even prettier in summer. Our overnight visit to the Barrel Inn was really good, with a warm, comfortable, well-equipped room, excellent food and staff who were pleasant and very welcoming. We'll certainly come back.

I finally made it in for a proper meal today, not just KP peanuts, and the food lived up to the hospitality. Absolutely top stuff. The atmosphere was lovely too, and the whole experience felt a step above your usual pub or inn while still keeping that welcoming warmth. The front-of-house team are always friendly, even when a sweaty lad in lycra, aka me, wanders into the formal dining area asking for water and snacks.
