The sheets and towels were clean, but that was the one positive I could find. We were seven people and had three rooms, so there was a clear comparison. Our room, 105, was meant to have a mini fridge but didn’t, and all the rooms had old, stained sofas and armchairs. There were scratches all over the walls, with dead spiders stuck in room 107. In the 105 bathroom, there was hair in the tub drain, and the neon light hung at an angle. The lighting was too poor for my phone to capture the drain properly, even with flash. In room 107 the bathroom floor had a scratch patched with tape; in 108 the shower knob was missing and the net curtain was scratched. The beds were very uncomfortable, with springs you could feel, and our mattress had a hole and had turned yellow. The smell in our room was bad, as it was in the reception and corridor. The reception carpet was stained and had leaves on it, as if it hadn’t been vacuumed, and the corridor carpet looked even worse and smelled bad. Honestly, a big no. We booked because it was a cheaper option for seven, but didn’t expect such a lack of care.

I was exhausted, so I stayed even though it was 9:30pm and I would otherwise have changed hotels straight away. The smell in the room was so bad that I felt like my sense of smell had gone. The hotel was stinky from the moment I walked in, and I was shocked. It was a strange feeling, wondering if this sort of place really existed in the UK. The price was low, but not low enough for this. It was the worst experience of my life. I think the hotel should be closed on health and safety grounds. I wouldn’t recommend staying there to anyone.

I chose it because of the price, and that was my responsibility, but I never expected such a disgusting room and hotel. The building looks almost abandoned inside and out. It was apparently once a Days Inn, and the Google Maps photos may be from that time. As soon as I went in, I noticed a strong musty, closed-in smell. The carpets are in terrible shape and probably account for much of the unpleasant odor. The rooms still have the amenities shown in the photos, but they’re in deplorable condition. Next time I’m in the Wakefield area or anywhere else, I’ll think about my well-being and peace of mind instead of watching my wallet.

The location is handy, with a well-stocked spa shop, Shell fuel station and Starbucks nearby, and a nice steak house opposite. Prices were very good and the reception staff were perfectly pleasant. Our room, 105, served its purpose, but it was tatty and the beds were very springy and not especially comfortable. There was an unpleasant smell, like cigarette smoke had worked its way into the carpet and upholstery. The shower was temperamental and needed a lot of adjustment to get hot water. A deep clean would be a good place to start. It could be much better.

The staff we met were polite and helpful, but the place clearly needs an overhaul. It felt like it had seen much better days, from the orange and purple room to the horrible smell on the lower corridor. The cups were so tiny they’d suit a dolls’ house. If all you need is a cheap night with no frills, you’ll be fine.
