I was left waiting outside from 11:30 until 3pm, with no reply to any of my calls or messages. I’d booked and paid, and had asked about checking in early several times by message, email, through Booking, and by phone. Nobody appeared at the property, and the doors were locked, so I couldn’t get in. People in the car park and the girl at M&S said this was a common problem; one person thought the owners were on vacation. I had to leave my bags there to make room for people I was collecting at the train station, then find another hotel. The people at the Strathburn were very accommodating and helpful. I stay in hotels half the year and have never experienced one with no staff, guests, or anyone on site. I rarely leave bad reviews, but this was mind-blowing. Now they’re disputing the charge and claiming I never checked in. Of course I didn’t, nobody was there, and it’s hard to walk through locked doors. If someone was there, why ignore me knocking and trying to get in? Check the cameras and you’ll see how long I waited and how often I tried to contact someone. I can show my phone records. I called twice, and there were incoming WhatsApp calls, but no one called me back. I heard nothing by email until I posted this review.

It was a handy location for where we needed to be, and we slept comfortably despite the bed seeming due for replacement. The hotel itself is lovely, though the rooms could use an update. Breakfast didn’t feel worth the price. The tea came in a thermal pot instead of an individual pot at the table, so it wasn’t very hot. I don’t eat egg, black pudding, or mushrooms, and after asking to leave those out, I was served a large plate with one small sausage, one rather bacon, and a little dish of beans. They really need to serve a more generous breakfast.
The food was a highlight of my one-night business stop in Inverurie. I had mushroom pakora to start and chicken Ceasar salad for my main, both nicely presented and really tasty. The restaurant food was fresh and fabulous. My room was cosy and, more importantly, quiet, with good wifi. The location worked well for visiting a customer, and the reception and front of house staff were friendly, courteous, and excellent. Highly recommended.
The bungalow apartment was wonderful, and the staff made a difficult situation feel positive. The hotel had been forced to close because of extreme weather, but they still let me go ahead with my reservation while I was travelling from far down South England. Thanks for being so accommodating during what must have been a tough time for the team. I’ll definitely come back and try the restaurant and bar.
The staff were friendly and attentive, and it’s a lovely place with a good breakfast. But on our second night, someone spent around twenty minutes hammering on the front door, shouting and swearing to be let in, and even kicking it at one point. Apparently there are no overnight staff, and the front door is locked with a code for late arrivals. This guest, possibly a drunk man, had forgotten the number and woke everyone up. The owner didn’t apologise, which was disappointing. We left at 5am on Tuesday and ours was the only car in the car park. It made me wonder if we were the only people in the building that night.
