Ye Olde Fighting Cocks

I met friends here for an evening meal while they were staying at the hotel. They were impressed with the rooms and loved the view of the viaduct. The service was great, and the portions were generous. I had the excellent sea bass, while my husband really enjoyed his steak and ale pie. We’d definitely recommend it.

The views across the bay from the front of the hotel are stunning in clear weather. We stayed one night, and the room was perfect and very good value. It had a proper old bath in the en suite, which we always prefer. The bar food was good and the real ale excellent. The staff were very friendly and let us into our room early since it was ready.

The location was good, with some nice cafes and shops along the promenade, and the staff were friendly. But for £120, the tiny, tatty room really needed updating, and it overlooked the car park. There were only about seven parking spaces for twelve rooms. Dinner was okay, while breakfast was pretty minimal. We stayed on a Saturday night, and no one asked how our stay had been when we checked out.

We’ve been here a few times since moving to the area, but yesterday’s visit was a letdown. Both the food and service were very poor, and the food was awful. No one asked if everything was okay, which made us suspect they knew how bad it was. We understand it may be a tiring time of year for staff, but it’s still the business’s job to serve customers. At above average prices, you expect a certain standard, and the staff seemed clearly uninterested. We’d planned to spend the afternoon drinking, but this place quickly put us off.
