The dinner was the highlight for us, as good as anything we’ve eaten in the Lake District and worthy of a Michelin star. It was a real credit to the chef and team. The public rooms have also been renovated recently and are very comfortable, and the staff were friendly and helpful throughout. We stayed for two lovely nights and enjoyed our room after sorting out a couple of snags. The step up to the bathroom was awkward at night, the sitting area felt cramped, and we wondered whether the furniture had been properly considered. We were also disappointed that the roof light windows and tiny window seat by the bed didn’t let us enjoy the lovely view. We understand the hotel changed hands this year and things may change. That would be sad, as it’s a special place with loyal returning guests. We hope the new owners see what people love about it and preserve its unique atmosphere. If they do, we’ll come back and recommend it. Best wishes to all the current staff, and thank you.

We stopped in for a drink after an evening walk on a quiet midweek night in February. The place was completely empty, with no music and barely any atmosphere, and we felt a bit out of place in our walking boots. Two pints cost £15, which felt very expensive. It might be different at other times of year.

The room was modern, cosy and spotless, and the food was delicious. Everyone was polite, friendly and helpful, especially Jason, who really couldn’t do enough for us. It’s a lovely, comfortable hotel in a stunning setting. We’d recommend it and plan to return.

A real little gem, with clean, comfortable rooms in a quiet spot that’s handy for local hikes. The food was a treat, with a new menu each day and so many delicious choices. The staff were all wonderful, which is what really makes this place stand out. We can’t wait to return and highly recommend it.

We had a lovely few days in a beautiful hotel in the pretty Borrowdale valley. Our double aspect bedroom had a lovely view, and the food was amazing. The staff were thoughtful and attentive throughout. We’ll be back.
