The food was amazing. I had what might be the best lamb shank I've ever tasted, and the breakfast was generous. We usually missed lunch, so I'm glad we managed to have dinner on our last night. It was beautiful, and better than any hotel food I've had before. The staff we met were all brilliant, warm, polite, charming and friendly. Our corner room had lots of light, felt clean and comfortable, and came with powerful showers and stunning views. What a beautiful place to visit.

We had the minted lamb shank with root vegetables. I usually dislike parsnips, but even I enjoyed them in this dish. The wine was delicious and very reasonably priced. It's a welcoming old world pub, and the staff were a delight. There's a separate shared sitting room with a fire, a lovely spot to relax.

The welcome and hospitality were second to none. The hotel has a lovely rustic feel, with a pub serving great evening food made from local ingredients. Breakfast offered plenty of choice and was freshly made. Our room was nicely decorated and well equipped, with a modern bathroom. Great location.

The food and service were excellent. If you're hungry, the steak and kidney pudding is amazing. The hunters skillet with chicken livers, pancetta and mushrooms made a great starter. We only ate at the restaurant and pub, we didn't stay in the rooms. It's rare to leave somewhere feeling so relaxed, happy and content with what I've eaten. If I hadn't been driving, I'd have gladly spent the evening in the bar over a glass of wine. Easy to recommend.

The walks nearby were jaw dropping, with Helvellyn straight out of the door and a loop around the very quiet, iconic lakesThirlmere reservoir. We stayed at the end of our holiday and loved the cosy, warm, modern room, especially the great bathroom. It was all at a very reasonable cost. Peter, who seemed to take care of everything, was wonderful, friendly and helpful. The building is lovely and cosy, with parts dating to the 16th century and a log fire in the guest relaxation area. We had steak and kidney pudding and a hunters starter of chicken liver and wild mushrooms, both really good. We'll definitely return.
