The Granary Hotel & Restaurant

There are a lot of lovely memories from our wedding, and the day and evening went smoothly. Katie and Abby worked hard and kept everything organised, so a huge thank you to them. The waiters and bar staff were friendly and helpful too. It was a fantastic day for everyone who came. Some parts of the stay didn't match what guests had paid for. Several people found their rooms cold, even with the small radiators. The air con in the breakfast area was broken, and it was so chilly you could see your breath. They brought in several radiators, but that tripped the lights, so we ate breakfast in the dark. Ruby, the breakfast waitress, did all she could in a difficult situation and went out of her way to make guests comfortable. Khalid took some money off the bill, though it still wasn't a great way to end the wedding. The Groom's party got ready in an unused hotel room. Even without guests staying there, you'd expect it to be in better condition. There was lipstick on the wall, floor and toilet paper, and the toilet seat was completely broken. We wish the rooms and breakfast had been a better experience.

The food at our Christmas lunch yesterday was lovely and cooked well, but the toilets were freezing on such a cold day. The waitress was very rude when I asked for tin foil to take a couple of slices of turkey home for my dog. She said I wasn't allowed, which annoyed me because I'd paid for it. Then she told me to hurry up so she could take the plate. She clearly wasn't friendly or good with customers. My friend was right to complain to the manager. At £95 per head, being treated like that is a lot to put up with. Management should train staff to be polite and customer friendly.

A pleasant little family run place with clean, modern rooms in a separate annexe, all on one level. The finish is decent, and the countryside setting is lovely while still giving good access to the main roads. Staff are friendly and helpful, and the food is good quality with generous portions. All in all, not too bad.

The problems began in the last month before my daughter's wedding, which she'd booked here as an all-in package. The hotel said her account was £7,000 short and asked for the balance. She explained she'd paid months earlier into the account THEY had emailed her. A few hours later they admitted the hotel's email had been hacked, compromising her details and those of another bride. We filed a bank claim and were told it would take 15 working days, which meant it wouldn't be sorted until the day after the wedding. At a meeting with one of the owners, the hotel took NO responsibility and insisted the balance be paid within seven days, refusing an extension despite the hack. The family found the money so the wedding could go ahead. Things went downhill further on the day. The bar staff couldn't pour a pint, and several guests ended up behind the bar doing it themselves. Reception staff were rude to guests checking into rooms, and the rooms were dirty when people finally got in. Some had broken furnishings, and one had a broken toilet flush button covered with tape. When we raised it, one owner became extremely rude and arrogant, called a guest a liar and threatened to call the police. The three-course meal took over three hours. Starters took 40 minutes, mains another 45, and some guests had to leave before dessert because of other commitments. When we asked about the delay, a staff member answered sarcastically. The dessert was wrong when it finally arrived, but we accepted it after waiting so long. After dinner, a staff member offered my son drugs at the bar, then asked him not to tell the manager when he said no. We did tell them. Katie, the wedding arranger, did her best, but the owner we dealt with was arrogant and delusional, and is in the wrong profession. A wedding is hopefully a once-in-a-lifetime occasion. Please don't trust this hotel with your special day.
