The Black Bull Hotel

The rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable, and the whole place was covered in gorgeous Yorkshire paintings. We stayed one night and were happy with the price. There’s a fantastic, very cheap fish and chip shop next door, and the station isn’t far away. Great pub and hotel!

We booked two nights for 30th & 31st December based on the photos online, then travelled 3.5 hours. It was a huge mistake. The room was disgusting, with stained carpets, holes in the walls, damp, and tea cups stuck to the window ledge. We booked a double, but the bed was nowhere near the size of a standard double. The only chef onsite could cook burgers, so there were no other food options, and we only found that out at check-in. We raised our concerns with the hotel and were told to contact the online agent we booked through. We did that three times, but each time the hotel failed to respond within the required timeframe, leaving us trying to resolve the situation and get a refund. We’re now hundreds of pounds out of pocket after having to find somewhere else to stay or travel home. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. One star is too generous. Honestly, avoid booking here at all costs. We can’t stress how awful it was.

The staff were pleasant and polite, which is why I gave it 2 stars. The food was desperately lacking. The so-called chicken feast was anything but, with dry meat and wings that might have come from a budgie. The pie was no better than a cheap service station pie, and the burger was bang average. I strongly suspect that even if it was "ping" food, none of it was prepared or cooked by anyone who normally spends much time in a kitchen. Without the staff, I would have rated it zero.

We aren’t local, but the place looked nice, so we went for a meal for two. The atmosphere was great, the staff lovely, and there was a broad menu. We both had burgers, and they were among the nicest we’ve ever had. Highly recommend, 5 stars.
