The staff were kind and helpful, and the hotel is handy for the harbour and bus station, with the town centre an easy walk away. Rooms were clean and nice, though you can hear every door closing and neighbours coughing. A few small details could use attention or an update, and room cleaning seemed to happen about daily. Prices felt rather high.

The views were stunning, and Ayre Hotel & Apartments is right in the centre of Kirkwall, which made getting around easy during my work trip. The place was comfortable and well kept, and I had a great stay. I'd happily recommend it.

The room was so cramped that I had to put my bag on the floor to open it, then keep stepping over it. I don't expect anything fancy when travelling alone, but that was a nuisance. Breakfast was very good, and the dinner restaurant had plenty of choices and really good food. Shops and the dock area were within walking distance.

The tour groups made for a noisy stay. I was woken several times around six thirty by people hurrying to the seven o'clock breakfast and talking loudly in the corridors, while the spring-loaded doors kept slamming. At seven there was already a queue of about 30 people outside the breakfast room, with more arriving. The rooms are small, and most look onto the neighbouring building rather than the harbour, despite the hotel being right by Kirkwell Harbour.

I spent three nights here and couldn't fault the stay. The room was spacious, clean and had a sea view; the staff were friendly and helpful. The location is wonderful, and there's free parking. Breakfast is buffet style with good quality food, especially the black pudding. I didn't try the restaurant, but the attached bar was surprisingly reasonably priced. I'd recommend the place without hesitation.
