Devonshire Arms

We only had one night, so the stay felt too short. The old building is beautiful, and our room was spacious and charming, with a very comfortable bed. We were upgraded because they were concerned the heating in our assigned room might not be working fully. We had dinner with a big family group. The starters and mains were generally excellent, though the desserts were a little disappointing. It was a busy evening, but the staff took good care of us without long waits. They were lovely and helpful. There were some nice beers on tap, though the malt selection could be better. We’d definitely return.

The staff were so warm and friendly, and our room was clean and tidy with a comfortable bed. We stayed three nights and ate at the restaurant each evening, the food was superb. There weren’t many vegetarian choices, but they happily turned a starter into a main when I asked. It was a generous portion and presented beautifully. Breakfast was delicious every morning too.

Service was excellent throughout our family Sunday lunch. We could choose from the à la carte menu or have beef sirloin, slow cooked duck, or slow cooked pork belly. We ordered all three of those meats and thoroughly enjoyed them.

The sharing meat board with beetroot and chutney was the best starter I’ve ever had. All the flavours worked together so well. We came to The Devonshire Arms for a romantic dinner and were glad we did. The staff were polite and attentive, and made us feel safe despite the current circumstances. The duck leg with creamy mash was another highlight, so tender and delicious. We also loved both desserts, the treacle tart with vanilla ice cream and the dark chocolate torte with espresso ice cream. If we lived closer, we’d make this our regular place.
