Best Western Plus Milford Hotel

The staff really made our coach party’s overnight stay enjoyable. They went out of their way to welcome everyone and were happy to help with anything. Our room was spacious and spotless, with excellent bedding and pillows and a very comfortable bed. The food was good, and there was plenty of choice in drinks at reasonable prices. Thanks to the whole team for a comfortable stay. I’d definitely recommend the hotel.

The four staff on duty were trying to cover reception, the bar and food service, and they deserve credit for keeping things moving. We arrived with our coach party in the evening and were asked to order meals straight away. The meal service was still a mess: my partner finished lukewarm soup about 20 minutes before my starter arrived. My spinach and ricotta arincini were three overcooked, chicken-nugget-sized balls of peas. An hour later my partner got five overcooked scampi pieces, while some guests had seven or eight. A few people who complained got two or three extra, but we didn’t. My beef lasagne had onions but no beef or cheese on top. We got different chips, chunky for him and skinny fries for me, and pudding took another hour. Some guests never received a main course. The room was dated and freezing despite our attempts to work out the heating. The TV was nearly useless. We’d requested a lower floor but were put at the far end of an upstairs corridor with no lift, and the corridor lights weren’t working. There was one biscuit for two. Outside, the car park was completely dark, with potholes and puddles everywhere. Breakfast was another letdown. The toaster, bread, butter and coffee machine were crammed into a corner. The continental selection was three slices of meat, cheddar and out-of-date yoghurt. There were also sausages, bacon, hash browns, tomato and scrambled eggs. See the photos.

The room was clean and comfortable, and the staff were professional, helpful and very good. It’s a useful stop on a long drive. Breakfast was disappointing, though: soggy hash browns and badly overcooked bacon, and at 8am it was clear the food had been sitting out for a while. The parking fee wasn’t made clear on Booking.com, and paying six quid to leave your car while staying overnight feels like a rip-off.

The rooms were lovely, clean and roomy, and the hotel looked good when we arrived. Dinner service was a shambles, though. The waitress seemed unsure what to do and brought one plate at a time. It took our table over an hour and a half to be served.
