Discovery Inn

A handy budget option for a night or two for work, with good value and a very central spot just a few minutes from Leeds station. The WiFi was okay, and there’s a useful ironing room. On Tuesday night I could hear some bar music, but it stopped well before midnight. It isn’t luxury, but there’s an off licence directly opposite and a really good curry place, Delhi Wala, nearby. Tesco or Sainsbury local are just around the corner too.

The location near the train station is ideal, and the room and bathroom were large with a comfortable bed. But the room was very cold. The central heating radiators didn’t work, especially in the bathroom. Two old electric heaters had been provided; I had to use one, but its cord wasn’t long enough to reach the bathroom. The shower control you have to lift was unscrewed, and I couldn’t screw it back in, so I couldn’t shower. I’m not sure I’d have wanted to in such a cold bathroom anyway. A strong draft kept blowing cold air onto me in bed, and even pushed the bedroom door open. I had to wedge my suitcase against it. The carpet tiles on the stairs also need replacing.

The sewer smell when I first walked in was overpowering, though I put it down to the roadworks outside. After that, I found the place had everything I needed in the heart of the city. It’s right across from the train station and just a few minutes’ walk from the bus station. My room was a little dated, but clean, tidy, well stocked, and well equipped. Most of all, it was very quiet despite the busy night in the city. The staff were prompt, courteous, efficient, very helpful, and professional and pleasant. The midweek rate was reasonable for such a central location, and I’ll stay here again when I pass through Leeds.

Even if it’s been a year since you last visited, Esther at reception remembers your name. I stay in plenty of hotels when I’m going to bands and things, and this one always gives a lovely, friendly welcome. There’s also a great real ale pub right next door, if that’s your thing.
