The Star Inn 1744

The surroundings were lovely, but our Sunday birthday lunch in the Bistro was disappointing. At 1 o’clock only two tables were occupied, yet the food took a very long time. When the lamb arrived, we were told they’d run out of mint sauce. The meat was tough, and the cheesecake, served in a glass, had a very unpleasant texture and taste. They’d run out of vanilla ice cream as well. The staff were cheerful and seemed to enjoy chatting behind the bar, but the customers waiting there didn’t seem to matter. We paid and left. Maybe we happened to visit on an unusual day, or maybe this is normal, but I’m afraid I won’t recommend it or return.

The friends I brought to The Star had never been before and came away really impressed. Picking from the excellent menu was the hard part. The food was fantastic in both quality and quantity, and the service was spot on. Hollie kept our drinks topped up and looked after us so well. We booked a table for Friday 13th February, and it was a 10 out of 10 for us. We’ll definitely be back.

The pub itself is nice, but lunch was poor. The fish batter and chips were both overcooked. After all the snow the day before, neither fire was lit, so what could have been a cosy winter meal was disappointing.

When work brings me to the area, this is my first choice of place to stay. It’s quiet, with comfortable, spacious rooms, and the food, drinks, and service are excellent. Highly recommended, just don’t book it when I need a room.
