The meal was generous, delicious and great value. There’s loads to choose from, from pies and tapas to fish and roasts, and you order at the bar, as the menu clearly says. The staff and management handled groups of all sizes, families, children and dogs really well. We live locally and wanted a lunchtime spot near Leyburn. Getting there on foot means crossing a narrow bridge and walking along a busy road, so we wore visible clothes and took lights for the return, which I’d recommend. It’s a 5/6m walk there and back, with lovely off-road country paths for all but about 500m. We’d asked a few days earlier about lunch with friends on New Year’s Day. They were heavily booked, but the lovely staff and landlady found us a space. After the walk we were ready to eat. It’s a proper country pub, with fires, good beer, locals, characters and ‘in comers’ all mixing together. The Richard lll in Middleham is an outstanding pub that’s doing things right. I know pubs are struggling, and I hope they keep going. Looking forward to another visit.

The special was a steak and ale pie with Stilton, made in-house by the chef. All four of us ordered it for lunch at Richard 111, and we agreed it was one of the best pies we’d tried, and we sample a lot! James and his wife were welcoming and friendly, the service was excellent, and there was a great range of well-kept beers. We’ll definitely return. Thank you.

We booked for eight and arrived on time, only to be told to order quickly because we had 15 minutes. There wasn’t much choice on the menu. The young waitress apologised but seemed out of her depth, and the manager also seemed inexperienced and unsure. She appeared more focused on clearing up and getting the band on. We left without eating. Why accept the booking? A call explaining the situation would have let me make other arrangements. The place needs a complete management revamp and a new business strategy. Not good.

My wife, our dog and I had a relaxing weekend, thanks to the welcoming staff and locals of Middleham. Having a big dog can make me nervous about how people will react, but both of us and the dog were made to feel welcome throughout. We’re looking forward to going back. The food was good, and my wife says the chilli had the best flavour she’s had. Thanks to the staff, and best wishes to the new Landlord and landlady in their new adventures.

We booked at the last minute yesterday, between visits to the Forbidden Corner and Wensleydale Creamery. The staff were wonderful and exceptionally helpful all evening. We both had the steak and Stilton pie, and it was rich, meaty and delightful, well worth a trip just for that. Big thanks to the Richard III Hotel for looking after two lost New Zealanders!
