New Road Hotel

I spent four nights in a pocket room. It was clean and quiet, even though mine faced the street, and there was enough space for one person and what I needed. The staff were really helpful too. The bathroom setup wasn’t to my taste. When you shower, everything in there gets wet, toilet included. There also wasn’t much storage, just three hangers on the wall.

As a housekeeping supervisor, I was pleased with the room: it was clean, the bed was comfortable, and the electric blinds could be controlled from the bed, which is a great solution. There were both EU and UK sockets as well. Before our stay I’d read the reviews and worried a little, but our room wasn’t cold. You can heat or cool it with the air conditioning, so I don’t understand why that’s a problem for some guests. Our room didn’t face the street, so I can’t speak to the noise. We skipped breakfast and didn’t use the restaurant or bar, so I can’t say whether they were good or bad, though both looked nice at first glance. The bathroom is an unusual setup, but with a bit of care we managed three nights without flooding the whole room. We had no trouble with the area or locals, and walked around the streets at night without anything happening. The East London mosque is just around the corner, so check Google Maps if the location concerns you. Some people seem impossible to please, but we had a great time. The staff were friendly and helpful, and customer service was great. I got a much cheaper rate for two nights in the Black Friday sale, which made it good value. I’d booked New Road Hotel for my husband’s birthday months ahead and asked for a courtyard-facing room. After reading recent Google reviews the day before, I emailed with my concerns. Reception confirmed the room and reassured me. At check-in, though, we were given a road-facing room. I went back to Reception, explained the request, and they apologized and quickly moved us to a courtyard-facing room. Later they brought brownies with candles, a lovely birthday gesture. We were in Warehouse K. The room was clean, spacious and nice, with a large comfortable bed and a wet-room-style bathroom. Because it faced the courtyard, it was very quiet. The heating worked, so we could set a comfortable temperature. There’s unlimited tea, coffee and hot chocolate in communal areas on each floor, but it’d be better to have these in every room. There’s no drinking water in the rooms either, so you have to pay for a bottle. The location is good. Whitechapel station is under a 10-minute walk away. From there, the Elizabeth Line takes you to Tottenham Court Road in just three stops, within easy walking distance of Covent Garden, Soho, Regent Street and other central areas. It’s not luxury, but it’s perfectly functional. I’d return if I could get another sale rate.

We’re on our third stay, and the staff are always extremely friendly. The hotel is right in the centre of Whitechapel, with modern, comfortable rooms, massive beds and lovely bathrooms with toiletries. Breakfast is excellent, and the facilities include free coffee stations and ironing facilities. There’s also a restaurant on site and a lovely bar.
